Atlanta Motorsports Park to host
‘Cross the Finish Line’ grad night
By Erica Jones
ejones@dawsonnews.com
In just a couple of weeks, Atlanta
Motorsports Park will host its “Cross the
Finish Line” grad night, honoring the
graduating seniors that make up the Class
of 2022.
The event will allow Dawson County
High School graduates to drive a lap at the
track and to get a commemorative photo
taken at the finish line as a truly unique
way to remember their graduation. There
will also be a limited number of discount
ed karting sessions available for those who
RSVP for them.
The event will take place at Atlanta
Motorsports Park (AMP), located at 20
Duck Thurmond Road in Dawsonville, on
June 17 at 5 p.m. All participants must
bring signed waivers, and minors under 18
years old can have a minor waiver done in
advance and bring it to the gate for check
in.
Graduates interested in attending the
event are asked to RSVP ahead of time at
https://www.eventbrite.com/e/cross-the-
finish-line-amp-tickets-106787933584. All
waivers are available to print under the
Eventbrite link.
The grad night event was begun in 2020
during the COVfD-19 pandemic as a way
to help the graduates celebrate despite so
many plans being disrupted. This year, the
event is back by popular demand from sev
eral AMP members who suggested it
should be brought back.
This year’s grad night event will be
made possible by AMP Owner Jeremy
Porter, COO Jane Dwey, CEO Donna Lee
and Drive Strong Program Coordinator
Emily Crane. Drive Strong, Alliance
Together and the Zappendorf Family
Foundation will present scholarships to the
top three ranking students and a few other
students at the event.

Taxes
Houses in both the cur
rent and previous tax years
are 100 percent complete,
so people are looking
more at market increase
and less at new construc
tion.
While the average is an
overall increase, it does
include all improved prop
erties. Many of those prop
erties that did not increase
were vacant, McCormick
added.
The county sent out
annual property tax assess
ments May 10 via a third-
party vendor. People can
appeal their assessment
notices until June 24,
2022.
This trend in rising val
ues comes in the context
of an ongoing housing
shortage, increased
demand and permits not
keeping up with the
demand, as a presenter
mentioned at the latest
Board of Commissioners
work session.
Dawson County is the
third fastest-growing coun
ty in Georgia, according to
the U.S. 2020 Census.
Bordering Dawson are the
state’s other top five fast
est-growing counties,
Forsyth, Cherokee, Hall
and Pickens.
Dawson County’s Tax
Assessor webpage pro
vides some more insight
into the property assess
ment process.
Property taxes are deter
mined as an ad valorem
tax or according to value.
Another key factor in your
bill is the tax rate, or mill-
age. A one-mill tax rate
means a tax liability of one
dollar per $1,000 of
assessed value.
As reported previously
in DCN, the Board of
Commissioners set the
county’s millage rate at
7.625, while the Board of
Education set theirs at 15.
Both the BOC and BOE
rolled back their tax rates
last fall. However, if rates
are rolled back but proper
ty values increase, that
could mean each entity
would receive more tax
revenue, as is the case with
Dawson County.
Property taxes are
charged against the owner
of the property on January
1, and against the property
itself if the owner is not
known. Property tax
returns are to be filed
between January 1 and
April 1 with the county tax
assessor’s office.
