6A I DAWSON COUNTY NEWS I dawsonnews.com Wednesday, June 15,2022 Sawnee Foundation gives back to some local charities By Erica Jones ejones@dawsonnews.com Recently, the Sawnee Electric Membership Foundation announced that its board has approved over $47,000 in funding for local charities, including several from Dawson County. According to a press release by the Sawnee Foundation, the total amount of funding to be contributed to local chari ties is $47,351 and will be given to: • American Fegion, Cumming Post 307 • Operation Appreciation, Inc. • Bald Ridge Fodge, Inc. • Forsyth County Certified Fiterate Community Program, Inc. • MUST Ministries, Inc. • Prevent Blindness Georgia • Safe Boating Fake Fanier, Inc. • Champions Community Foundation, Inc. • C.A.S.T. for Kids Foundation • Rachel’s Gift • ACT Together Ministries • K.A.R.E. for Kids, Inc. • Camp Kudzu, Inc. • AFS Association of Georgia, Inc. • The Place of Forsyth County, Inc. • Kilough Elementary PTO The funding given to the 17 charities was generated in part from Sawnee EMC members who participate in the organization’s Operation Round Up Program, which allows participating members to round up their electric bill to the next dollar. The money is distributed by grants to charitable organi- zations through the Sawnee Foundation. “Sawnee EMC members have a unique opportunity to support Operation Round Up and give back to their local communi ties,” Cindy Badgett, director of external affairs, said in the release. Each month, approxi mately 15,000 Sawnee EMC members round up their electric bill to the next dollar. On average, participating members contribute about $6 per year. Since its inception in 2003, the Foundation has used funds from Operation Round Up to donate over $3.8 million back into local communi ties. Pollinator Tour to be held June 25 By Erica Jones ejones@dawsonnews.com On Saturday June 25, the Dawson County Woman’s Club will host its second annual “Pollinator Garden Tour”, allowing community members to learn about the importance of pollinator gardens and to visit some of these gardens that are already in place in Dawson County. According to information provided by the club, this year’s pollinator garden tour will run from 10 a.m. to noon on June 25 and will include both a walking tour and a driving tour. Pollinator gardens are small gardens that display native perennials to attract honey bees, native gees, butterflies, hummingbirds and other pollinators. Each site will include information on the best plants to grow, tips for growing milkweed for Monarchs and free flow ers and seeds. The walking tour will begin at Main Street Park at the raised flower beds. Participants will receive a map to the other garden sites that they can walk to, including the Dawson County Farmers Market, The Fancy Flea, Days Gone By, Dawsonville City Hall, The Bowen, Dawson County Fibrary and The Station (Serendipity Dawsonville) Antiques. The driving tour will include four large gardens throughout the county, including Rock Creek Park and three local community members’ home gardens. In addition to the walk ing and driving tours, this year’s event will also include a “Pollinator Census” for children of all ages. The census will take place at the Main Street Park garden and at the Farmers Market garden. During the census, partici pants will choose a flower to watch and spend five minutes counting how many butterflies, honey bees, native bees and other pollinators visit.
