Following a discussion
about school safety at a
Board of Commissioners
meeting earlier this month,
the Dawson County
Sheriff’s Office has now
been given the go-ahead to
apply for federal funding to
address the issue.
The BOC voted unani
mously to approve DCSO’s
application for a school
safety-specific Community
Oriented Policing Services
(COPS) grant during their
June 16 voting session, just
before the first deadline of
June 17.
BOC meetings are held in
the assembly room of the
Dawson County
Government Center on the
first and third Thursdays of
every month. Starting in
January, the BOC began
holding voting sessions
directly after the 4 p.m.
work sessions.
The board’s decision fol
lows the BOC’s May 5
approval to apply for a sep
arate COPS grant which
would allow DCSO to hire
up to four more certified
law enforcement officers.
The school safety grant
would allow law enforce
ment to apply for $500,000,
with a 25 percent local cash
match. It’s a competitive,
repeat 36-month grant, said
Dawson County Sheriff Jeff
Johnson during his presen
tation at the BOC work ses
sion on June 16.
The grant’s funds would
support local officer train
ing to prevent student vio
lence; hardening or deter
rent measures including
metal detectors, locks,
lighting and other items;

Following much public
curiosity and anticipation
online, Ling Ling’s
opened in mid-May at 29
North 400 Center Lane,
next to CVS on Ga. 53.
Prior to its opening, He
helped establish six other
locations in New York
and New Jersey.
He shared that his
whole family, including
his parents, had experi

business going back to
their time in China.
In a summer 2006 arti

In 1980, He immigrated
