Benson, Hubbard claim state fishing title
Local duo also notches sixth place in world event

The Dawson County fish
ing duo of Buddy Benson
and Braedon Hubbard have
continued to show their
angling expertise this sum
mer, participating at two
events in June.
They began their summer
slate with a winning perfor
mance at the two-day Bass
Nation High School State
Championship at Lake
Hartwell, with an aggregate
weight of 32.8s pounds.
Later that month, the duo
went over to Alabama to fish
at the High School Fishing
World Finals and National
Championship at Lake
Pickwick.
At a four-day event with
435 teams, the Dawson team
finished 13th at the national
championship event before
finishing sixth at the world
championship.
The world event featured
teams from around the globe
from Canada to Africa.
Next up, the team will
head back to Lake Hartwell
to participate at the Bass
Nation High School National
tournament from Wednesday,
Aug. 10, to Friday, Aug. 12.

On Monday, July 4,
hundreds of people
flocked to the Georgia
Racing Hall of Fame to
enjoy the sunshine and
admire the dozens of clas
sic cars lining the parking
lot during the museum’s
July 4 car show.
The show ran from 8
a.m. to 3 p.m. on July 4
and included dozens of
classic cars encompassing
a range of manufacturers,
dates and models. The
show included the presen
tation of the colors, and at
the end of the show win
ners were awarded in sev
eral categories, including
Best Engine, Best Paint,
Best in Show and Bill

Softball looks
to build upon
2021 success

2021 season record: 16-21 overall,
11-10 in Region 7-3A (fourth place), fifth
place at GHSA Class 3 A State Tournament
Key returners: Layne Bailey (Jr.),
Lauren Kurtz (Sr.), Reese Moore (Sr.),
Micah Burruss (So.), Ace Cochran (So.)
Season Outlook:
The Lady Tigers are coming off a suc
cessful first season under head coach Justin
Rickett, winning six of their last nine regu
lar season games before making a deep run
in the Class 3A State Tournament.
They swept Region 5 champions
Westminster in the first round of the tour
nament before taking two of three games
from Tattnall County to make the final
group of eight teams. After losing two of
the next three games, the Lady Tigers fin
ished fifth overall at the state tournament.
One of the biggest challenges facing the
team will be replacing the seven seniors
from last year’s squad.
Those losses will primarily affect the
offense, as returning players Layne Bailey
and Reese Moore are set to be starting
pitchers.
However, Bailey and senior Lauren
Kurtz will be important offensive forces
heading into next season and will be tasked
with helping the younger players adjust to
the competition.
Bailey is coming off an first-team All-
Region season in which she led the team
