INSIDE, 2A DawsonCountyNews WEDNESDAY I JULY 20, 2022 Dawson News ► com dawsonville, GEORGIA $1.00 Bonds quashed in Roberts cases Judge’s order stated Dawson man posed risk of committing further felonies By Julia Fechter jfechter@dawsonnews.com After almost a day full of hear- ing motions at the Dawson County Courthouse, Senior Judge David Emerson ruled Friday on the fore most motions related to the cases of the Dawsonville man accused in Kaleb Duckworth’s 2021 death. Emerson wrote to revoke Daniel Roberts’ bond in the 2021 case and declined to reinstate the defendant’s older bond from 2019. The judge also denied bond for the case involving the latest allegations against Roberts. The judge’s succinct order stated that Roberts posed a risk of committing fur ther felonies, listed the alleged offenses that occurred after 2019. The order elaborated that Roberts violated the December 2021 bond by going places where he wasn’t allowed to go, per his bond conditions. DCN will provide updates on Roberts’ other motions heard Friday when those rulings become available. Timeline Documents for the oldest case alleged that after getting in a ver bal disagreement with one vic tim, Roberts hit them while leav ing the parking lot of Thompson Creek Park on Oct. 23, 2019. After being arrested the same night as those alleged offenses, Roberts was charged on Oct. 24 with two counts of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during commission of a crime and carrying a concealed weapon. LeCave discusses goals, focuses for first year as superintendent By Erica Jones ejones@dawsonnews.com Dawson County Schools’ new superintendent, Nicole LeCave, officially stepped into her new role following previous superintendent Damon Gibbs’ retirement in May of 2022. Since then, she has been hard at work working with her team and staff to pre pare the school system to go back to school this fall. The Dawson County News sat down with LeCave to discuss her goals and sever al important focuses for her first year as superintendent. History, background LeCave has been employed by Dawson County Schools since 1998, and 14 of those 24 years have been in administrative leadership positions. She has served as a teacher, assistant principal of curric ulum and discipline, dis trict-level coordinator, director for teaching and learning, and assistant superintendent, and her most recent role was serv ing as the Deputy Superintendent beginning in 2020. LeCave holds an under graduate degree in middle grades education, a master’s degree in curriculum and instructional supervision and an educational leader ship certification from the University of North Georgia, which she earned by completing the Georgia Leadership Institute for School Improvement (GLISI) Rising Stars Future Leaders Performance-Based Program. She is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in educational law from Liberty University. LeCave has been married to her husband Sean, a 27-year veteran of the United States Marines, for 20 years. Together they have four adult sons and a daughter who will graduate from Dawson County Schools in 2024. LeCave said that she loves working in the Dawson County School System, and that she couldn’t picture working in another district. “I’ve worked my whole career here; people ask me See LeCave 13A EMS debuts county’s new ambulances By Julia Fechter jfechter@dawsonnews.com The enthusiasm around Dawson County’s two new ambulances was clear Tuesday after noon, with people like District 1 Commissioner Sharon Fausett smiling in delight as Dawson County Fire Chief and EMA Director Danny Thompson described several of the unit’s gadgets. Now, Dawson County has two new ambu lances. One of the med units was on display at Fire Station 2 late Tuesday afternoon after already being taken out on calls, with the other one then in service. There are a total of four staffed ambulances and three reserve ones, since med units 1 and 2 have been transitioned to reserve status. During their summertime food drive, teams and the organization gathered 3,885 pounds and 46 oz. of food, far exceeding the 500-pound goal that had been set earli er.
