During the July 18 meeting of the
Dawsonville City Council, the mayor and
council members held special recognitions
for several city employees and volunteers for
their accomplishments and hard work.
The mayor and council members recog
nized Public Works staff member John
Tatum as the June employee of the month,
presenting him with a certificate honoring his
performance and his hard work for the city.
They also recognized Public Works
Operations Foreman Steven McNeal as the
employee of the second quarter. The employ
ee of the quarter is decided by the votes of
the employees form the three employee of
the month candidates from April, May and
June, and McNeal was elected by his fellow
employees after first being chosen as the
April employee of the month.
“Our employees vote on this and Steven
got three times as many votes as the other
two candidates added together, so he’s very
well thought of,” City Manager Bob Bolz
commented during the meeting.
Council members recognized utilities
department staff member David Schuette for
his one year of service to the city, presenting
him with a service award for his accomplish
ment.
“David works in our utilities department
and does a fantastic job,” Bolz said during
the meeting.
The mayor and council also recognized
Planning and Zoning Director David
Picklesimer for his three years of service to
the city. Picklesimer was not present at the
meeting.
In addition to the service awards, the city
also held special recognitions for several vol
unteers who were instrumental in the design
and installation of the new nine-hole disc
golf course at Main Street Park.
“The new disc golf course has been incred
ibly popular and we’re not even quite fin
ished with it,” Bolz said. “A local school
teacher has been very active in designing the
course and pushing its development and
helping with construction; we’re recognizing
volunteer extraordinaire Mr. Jim Guy.”
Guy was presented with a certificate dur
ing the meeting, recognizing his hard volun
teer work to help make the disc golf course
at the city’s park what it is.
The city also recognized two other people
who volunteered their time and work to help
design and build the disc golf course: City
Clerk Beverly Banister and her husband
Marc Banister. Together with Guy, both
Marc Banister and Beverly Banister helped
to spearhead the efforts to install the course
at Main Street Park.

BOC OKs more money
for meeting room gear

During their July 21 voting session,
the Dawson County Board of
Commissioners gave the thumbs up for
additional funds to bolster the second
floor assembly room’s technology for
online viewers of public meetings.
Tech additions will include upgraded
speakers and volume control functions
as well as multiple changes to the voting
system, which Public Affairs Officer
Laura Fulcher called the project’s larg
est component. Commissioners will be
able to use individual tablets and com
puters for voting.
The project’s final cost is $99,742, an
increase of $23,501.
Fulcher presented the request to the
board at the July 21 work session, and
the measure was subsequently approved
during the voting session that immedi
ately followed.
She later referred to the changes as
“pretty much an overhaul” of equipment
in the assembly room, much of which is
the same as when the board started
using the gathering space.
A little over two years ago in May
2020, the county was provided with
materials and labor to allow for online
streaming and viewing of public meet
ings. Then last fall, the board approved
$76,241 for the assembly room technol
ogy upgrades.
Since that time, Fulcher explained that
her office and Purchasing have been
corresponding with the vendor, W.H.
Platts, to obtain updated pricing for the
completion of the project. With a delay
in receiving equipment and increased
costs toward the beginning of this year,
some items were removed from the
original request list that could later be
added back, Fulcher said.
These changes helped keep the total
project expense under $100,000.
Fulcher said the county’s goal is to
aim for equipment installation during
the board’s winter break between
December and January.
“We’ve just reached a point where we
can’t actually do any more upgrades
technology-wise with what we have,”
Fulcher added.
