4A I DAWSON COUNTY NEWS I dawsonnews.com Wednesday, August 17,2022 Man pleads guilty to battery for touching toddler By Julia Fechter jfechter@dawsonnews.com A Dawsonville man has pleaded guilty to one charge after inappropriately touch ing a toddler at the Walmart on Power Center Drive in November. During a July 29 calendar call, Manuel Morales-Tzaj, 47, pleaded guilty to one count of misdemeanor simple battery. He was sentenced to one year with the first four days to be in confinement and the rest of the time to be served on probation. The Dawson County Sheriff’s Office arrested Morales-Tzaj the evening of Nov. 13, 2021, follow ing an incident at the Dawsonville Walmart. Morales-Tzaj’s warrant and Morales- Tzaj indictment allege that sometime between 7-8 p.m. that night, he touched the female child on her head, arm and back while she was standing up in a grocery cart. The incident was immediately reported, and a DCSO deputy responded to the supermarket at about 7:30 p.m., according to the warrant. Morales-Tzaj was arrest ed around 9 p.m. The warrant was issued for Morales- Tzaj on Nov. 15 and two days later, he was released from DCSO custody on a $5,700 bond. The victim’s father previously posted to the “Focus on Dawson” Facebook group thanking the sheriff’s office, Walmart’s security and a witness for their “fast response and investigation.” Erica Jones Dawson County News Beginning this September, the Dawson County Public Library will temporarily extend its hours in order to better serve the community. Dawson County Library to extend hours during September, October Amicalola EMC members from 2002 to receive $2.6M refunds By Erica Jones ejones@dawsonnews.com Amicalola EMC members who had elec tric service during the year 2002 are set to receive $2.6 million total in refunds, accord ing to a press release by the organization. “Amicalola EMC members are more than just consumers; they own the company,” the release said. “As a member-owner of a not- for-profit electric coop erative, each year mem bers are assigned any monies collected in excess of operating costs. When financial conditions permit, the board authorizes a refund of these monies.” According to the release, this year the board will allocate $2.6 million in refunds for members who had elec tric service in 2002. Capital credits have been issued to Amicalola EMC mem bers for each year from 1940 to 2002, or 62 years total. Individual refunds are based upon the amount of electricity purchased during the specified year, the release added. Those who were mem bers in 2002 and still have active accounts can look for a credit in their September electric bills. Other refunds will be sent by check. By Erica Jones ejones@dawsonnews.com The Dawson County Public Library will tem porarily extend its hours for the months of September and October, allowing students in the school system more options to use the library to study and research. According to a press release by the library, the decision to extend the hours is based on the start of school and the increased need that local students have for the resources the library offers. “We realize that when school starts, student assignments and research projects may require easi er access to information and to a fast internet/Wifi connection,” the release said. “Because of this, the Dawson County Library 'We look for ward to serving Dawsonville and Dawson County stu dents as they begin another school year.' Dawson County Library press release will be staying open one evening a week during the months of September and October to help meet these needs.” Effective from Tuesday, Sept. 6 through Tuesday, Oct. 25, the library’s hours will be Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. “Our hope is that we can offer some evening hours on a more perma nent basis moving for ward in the future,” the release added. “However, current staffing levels allow us to do so only on this temporary basis, as staff hours must be shift ed in order to do so.” The library’s normal schedule will resume on Wednesday, Oct. 26. While the library will not be able to do program ming, it will be open for access to computers, homework help, notary services, faxing and cop ies. “We look forward to serving Dawsonville and Dawson County students as they begin another school year,” the release said. The Dawson County Kinetic by Windstream names new area manager for Dawson By Erica Jones ejones@dawsonnews.com Joshua Walden has been named as the new Dawson County area manager for Kinetic by Windstream, according to a press release by the organiza tion. The Dahlonega man has been with the company for 17 years, most recently as a maintenance technician before being selected as the new area manager. In 2004, he studied electrical systems at Lanier Technical College in Clarksville, Ga. “We’re excited to see Josh step into the position as area manager,” Kinetic state opera tions President Michael Four said in the release. “Josh knows the passion and hard work it takes to bring ‘High Speed for Here’ to our customers as we invest in our network and our people.” Kinetic by Windstream provides broadband, entertainment and security services through a fiber network to con sumers and businesses, primarily in rural areas in 18 states. Walden City receives finance award By staff reports The City of Dawsonville has earned an award for its finance department’s excellence in financial reporting and hard work on its financial report for the fiscal year. According to a recent press release by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA), the city received the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for the fiscal year that ended on June 30, 2021. The award was given to the city by the GFOA for its excellent work on its annual comprehensive financial report for the fiscal year. “The report has been judged by an impartial panel to meet the high stan dards of the program, which includes demonstrating a constructive ‘spirit of full disclosure’ to clearly communicate its financial story and motivate potential users and user groups to read the report,” the release said. This certificate of achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and finan cial reporting, the release added, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management.
