During the car show, another event was taking place at Main Street Park — the SNA Walk with Christ 3K and children’s celebration. The festivities, which sought to give local special needs children a day of fun, also featured a nonprofit organization that gives creative job opportunities to teens and young adults in the special needs community — Three Basketeers. Currently, the group has five individuals who use their skills and imagination to create unique designs for prod ucts such as Christmas cards, coffee mugs and note books. “It just gives our [special needs] population and our parents hope that there is something beyond school,” vocational director Sandra Tanner said. “If it means an adaptive schedule and environment just to get a little taste of what competitive employment is all about, then how wonderful.” The Three Basketeers had a table set up displaying many of the original products crafted by their five cre ators. Tanner said that the process and payoff of making products is a source of joy for these hard workers. “They have a sense of accomplishment when it comes to the very end, [when] an order comes in and they go through the process of filling that order,” Tanner said. “The last touch is a sticker that says ‘specially packaged for you by’ and then they sign it.” According to an April article by sister publication Forsyth County News, the organization now has a phys ical store on 6805 Keith Bridge Road at the crossing of Jot Em Down Road. Their website is www.threebaske- teers.org.
