Boy crafts, sells bracelets for ‘Shop with a Cop’
By Julia Fechter

After helping raise money for
his church’s VBS penny wars
earlier this year, Dawson
County 10-year-old Nolan
Dearwent and his parents found
a sincere way to give back to
the community.
Nolan decided to sell brace
lets benefiting the Dawson
County Sheriff Office’s annual
“Shop with a Cop” fundraiser.
He recently reached out to
DCSO and asked about making
bracelets to sell and raise
money for
helping other kids this
Christmas as part of the agen
cy’s “Shop with a Cop” pro
gram.
This annual DCSO event lets
children who otherwise
couldn’t purchase Christmas
gifts for themselves and/or
family members. In previous
years, DCSO deputies and offi
cers from other agencies have
accompanied children to local
stores to buy holiday gifts.
DCSO first shared Nolan’s
efforts in a Wednesday after
noon Facebook post. When
Nolan visited the law enforce
ment center Thursday after
noon, he raised over $100 sell
ing bracelets to DCSO depu
ties.
His first customer there was
Dawson County Sheriff Jeff
Johnson.
“We are thankful for young
Nolan and his heart to serve
others,” Johnson said to DCN.
“What a great way to kick off
the holidays and the ‘Shop with
a Cop’ season. The men and
women of the Dawson County
Sheriff’s Office are so proud of
this young man and for his
compassion for others.”
Nolan’s mother, Sophia,
explained that her son’s father,
Chris, taught him how to make
the paracord bracelets. Adult
ones require about eight feet of
cord, while children ones
require six-and-a-half feet,
Nolan said.
Looking at the vibrant array
of bracelets, the 10 year old
smiled and said it only takes
him five minutes to make a
bracelet.
Since Nolan’s selling more
bracelets now, his parents have
started helping him make them.
After attending this past
Saturday, Nolan and his family
are expected to be at the
Amicalola Regional Farmers
Market on future weekends.
The market space is located at
86 Allen Street, The farmers
market starts Saturdays at 8
a.m. and will continue until
later this fall.
Nolan’s bracelets are $5
each, and all proceeds will go
toward “Shop with a Cop.”
People who want a bracelet
but can’t make it to the farmers
market can contact Nolan’s
family at (706) 633-6965 to
inquire about buying one.
Motorcycle ride
DCSO is resuming the
motorcycle ride done for “Shop
with a Cop” in previous years.
The agency will host the ride
on Saturday, Oct. 15, at the
Georgia Racing Hall of Fame,
located at 415 Ga. 53 East in
Dawsonville.
Registration begins at 8:30
a.m., and riders will put their
kickstands up at 9:45 a.m. to
start the ride route. The motor
cycle pack will start at the rac
ing hall before going into
downtown Dawsonville and
around the historic courthouse,
then going west toward Pickens
County and eventually turning
back into Dawson County and
heading northeast into
Lumpkin County. Then, the rid
ers will head south toward
Dawsonville and back to the
racing hall.
The entire route is expected
to take between an hour and 90
minutes to complete, Sheriff
Johnson said.
There will be door prizes and
a raffle drawing at the event.
It’s $25 for an individual rider
and $40 for double riders.
Registered riders will get an
event t-shirt. Walk-ins are also
welcome to participate in the
ride.
People are encouraged to reg
ister online to ensure their shirt
size is available upon arrival at
the event.
DCSO’s “Shop with a Cop”
cruiser will also be out again
this year. Details will be pub
lished on the agency’s social
media. A set date for taking

for our deputies,” Johnson said.
“Just spending time with the

This weekend, the Dawson County
Humane Society will partner with Best
Friends Animal Society for their
National Adoption Weekend to help
combat the growing shelter crisis in
America.
According to a press release by the
organization, the Dawson County
Humane Society No-Kill Shelter will
host four adoption venues this weekend
to allow the public to meet and potential
ly adopt some of the shelter’s animals.
“Due to recent challenges such as
staffing shortages, limited shelter hours,
increasing volunteer needs and reduced
adoption events, the time is now to help
save lives by adopting a pet,” the release
said.
Adoption sites for this weekend will
be the Dawson County Petco, Petsmart,
the Humane Society Resale Shop at 54
Lumpkin Campground Road South and
at the shelter, 633 Martin Road. Hours
and specific locations for each venue
will be posted on the Shelter and Resale
Shop’s website and Facebook page, and
all animals available for adoption can be
seen on the website at dawsoncountyhu-
manesociety.org.
The shelter is offering half price adop
tion fees for the weekend. All animals
adopted through the shelter are spayed
or neutered, up-to-date on vaccines and
microchipped. Those who are not in a
position to help by adopting an animal
but want to help in other ways can go to
the shelter’s website to view a list of
shelter needs and sponsorship informa
tion.
