Atlanta Gear Works
strikes deal with McClain
Industrial Technologies
By Erica Jones
ejones@dawsonnews.com
Dawsonville’s Atlanta
Gear Works has
announced a new work
ing agreement with
McClain Industrial
Technologies, Inc.
(MiTek), which will bring
over 30 years of contacts
in steel and aluminum.
According to a press
release by Atlanta Gear
Works, MiTek will help
the gearbox and manufac
turing firm “spread its
34-year reputation in pulp
and paper to the steel and
aluminum industries”.
“Atlanta Gear Works is
a leader in the pulp and
paper industry,” MiTek
President Cory McClain
said in the release. “We’re
looking forward to offer
ing their same exception
al service and support to
our contacts in steel and
aluminum.”
MiTek has been in
business since 1987 and
is headquartered in
Alabaster, Alabama. The
company has extensive
contacts with mechanical
maintenance decision
makers in steel and alu
minum rolling mills
throughout the southeast
United States, and
MiTek’s exclusive territo
ry will include Alabama,
Arkansas, Louisiana,
Kentucky, Mississippi,
Tennessee, Texas and
southern Indiana.
“We were pleased that
MiTek became available
to help us grow our rela
tions with the steel indus
try,” Atlanta Gear Works
Vice President of Sales
Craig Massa said in the
release. “Their 30-year
experience with steel will
help us better serve our
steel customers.”
According to the
release, the agreement
comes at a time when
U.S. steel capacity is
expected to increase even
as prices drop, therefore
increasing mills’ need for
gearbox repair services.
“Given this forecast,
the timing for bringing
MiTek on board is opti
mal and should enable us
to maintain and even
grow our market share of
the industry, no matter
what happens in the
wider economy,” Massa
said.
The release added that
Atlanta Gear Works will
back its service to the
steel and aluminum
industries with the same
promise that it has built
its reputation in other
industries on: “Any make,
any model, anywhere,
anytime, repaired or
reverse-engineered to
equal or better quality.
Guaranteed.”

City of Dawsonville to
conduct impact fee study
This is not a commitment by the city
to incur or adopt impactfees, but
what they will provide us is with a
document that will allow us to review
it and then determine if we wish to
proceed with impactfees and draft
the ordinance from this document.'
Mike Eason, Dawsonville Mayor

During the Sept. 19
meeting of the
Dawsonville City
Council, council mem
bers voted to approve an
agreement with the
Georgia Mountain
Regional Commission to
conduct an impact fee
study in the upcoming
months.
Impact fees are fees
imposed on project devel
opers to allow the devel
oper to pay for all or a
portion of the costs of
providing public services
to a new development.
Currently, the city does
not impose impact fees
on developers.
During the meeting,
Dawsonville Mayor Mike
Eason explained that
approving the agreement
with the Georgia
Mountain Regional
Commission (GMRC)
isn’t the same thing as
approving impact fees,
but that the GMRC would
conduct a study to help
the city decide whether or
not to consider putting
impact fees in place.
“This is not a commit
ment by the city to incur
or adopt impact fees, but
what they will provide us
is with a document that
will allow us to review it
and then determine if we
wish to proceed with
impact fees and draft the
ordinance from this docu
ment,” Eason said.
Eason said that the city
has had several bids on
the project, but that the
GMRC’s bid was the
best. The cost to the city
to conduct the study will
be $15,000, and the docu
ment provided by the
GMRC at the end of the
study will be a “full-ser
vice document”, he
added, so the city
wouldn’t have to go back
to the GMRC after the
completion of the study.
The city council voted
unanimously to approve
the agreement with the
GMRC to move forward
with the impact fee study.
