2A I DAWSON COUNTY NEWS I dawsonnews.com Wednesday, January 11,2023 Church offers weekly meals to those in need By Julia Hansen jhansen@dawsonnews.com Members of one Dawson County congrega tion will soon open their church’s doors and their hearts on a weekly basis to others looking for food and fellowship. Cornerstone Christian Church, located at 236 Etowah River Road, will serve hot meals to those in need every Monday start ing Jan. 9 from 6:15-7:30 p.m. as part of its “Kitchen of Hope.” If you have additional questions about the “Kitchen of Hope,” you can reach out to the church through its main phone number, (706) 265-4933. Ministerial staff will be present during the weekly meals, so if people attend with needs that are either spiritual or financial, they can be redirected to the appropriate help, said event co-organizer and church member Allison Cantrell. The meal kitchen is a revamped effort of previ ous attempts and now has the support of members like those involved in the church’s women’s minis try, Cantrell said. She explained that the idea for “Kitchen of Hope” gained steam in light of conversations like the one she had with fel low church member and secretary Jodi Cofer, who’s also volunteered with Dawson County Family Connection and The Place. “We were just talking, and she had mentioned Chamber of Commerce holds ribbon-cutting for Crossroads of Dawsonville By Erica Jones ejones@dawsonnews.com The Dawson County Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon-cutting Thursday, Jan. 5, for Crossroads of Dawsonville, an addiction recovery center specializ ing in medication-assisted treatment and counseling to help its patients. Crossroads of Dawson is located at 400 Dawson Common Circle Suite 410 and has been in operation in Dawson County since 2016. According to pro gram director and clinic director Michelle Harrison, the center spe cializes in helping patients come off of addictions. “We do medication- assisted treatment for peo ple who are trying to come off of opiates like heroin, pain medication; we see a lot of patients who come in and are using everything you can imagine and then some,” Harrison said. “We provide counseling, medi cation services and we have a doctor on site so we do treat the whole person.” Patients must be at least 18 years old to start with the center, and those in Crossroads’ program are encouraged to stick with it for at least one to two years, she said. “Some decide to stay longer, some decide to stay shorter, but we do see the most success with the patients who are here for at least two years or lon ger,” Harrison said. The center takes several forms of insurance and is in network with Medicaid, Medicare and several com mercial insurances. Self pay is also accepted. For patients that may need additional help, Harrison added that Crossroads has a large net work of other resources they can refer their patients to. “Pretty much any way people are seeking help we’re here, and if we’re not able to help we try and refer them to at least a few other places that can help,” Harrison said. “We try to coordinate with other resources and referrals within the community to Erica Jones Dawson County News The Dawson County Chamber of Commerce on Jan. 5 held a ribbon-cutting for Crossroads of Dawsonville, located at 400 Dawson Common Circle, Suite 410. Wismar, who was arrested by DCSO in October, has been charged with one count each of identity fraud, theft by taking and exploiting an elderly person. The indictment states that Wismar allegedly tried to use the elderly couple’s checking num ber to obtain a 2020 Toyota Tacoma and also stole more than $25,000 from one of the victims on Feb. 13, 2022. DCSO charged Raible with three counts of identity fraud and Reid with one count of that offense. The meal kitchen is intended to help more than only those with financial or food needs. “[It’s for] if you need fel lowship, if you need just someone or talk to... if you want to make friends or if you want to get into a church and you don’t want to come on a Sunday where everybody’s there,” Cantrell added of the event. “It’s fulfilling all kinds of needs over a meal.” Her and the other volun teers’ primary goal is to see people uplifted through their efforts. “We just hope that peo ple feel seen and loved and that Jesus is glorified,” Cantrell said.
