Four Tigers advance to state sectionals
By Rio White
riowhite@dawsonnews.com
A quartet of Dawson County
wrestlers will be advancing to
the Class 3A State Sectionals
after finishing in the top four of
their respective weight classes at
the Area 7-3A Championships
hosted by Gilmer High School
on Saturday, Feb. 4.
“We are excited to get four
through to the first round of state
this weekend and the other five
as alternates still have a chance
to be called up,” head coach
Arron Haynes said. “I felt like
the boys wrestled tough. Overall,
I felt like we had a very good
weekend.”
Junior Alex Stewart led the
way for the Tigers with a runner-
up finish in the 175-pound
weight class, coming into
Saturday’s competition as one of
Dawson’s best wrestlers with a
17-15 record.
His regular season record
earned him a first-round bye and
a spot in the semifinals. While
that bye also meant Stewart
would already be going to the
state sectionals as a top-four fin
isher, his efforts on Saturday
showed he wanted the Area title.
His first opponent was Jackson
Burford of White County, who
Stewart quickly gained momen
tum against. After just over a
minute, Stewart earned his way
to the final.
Stewart would face a much
taller task for the Area title,
going up against William
Godfrey of Pickens, who held a
19-8 record coming into the tour
nament.
Godfrey and Stewart tussled
for a while and neither gave up
any ground for an extended peri
od.
But Godfrey made his move at
the right time, getting Stewart
down just under three minutes
into the match.

After building an early

expand their advantage in
the second quarter through
offensive patience and high
defensive pressure.
“I thought our defense

Todd Cottrell said. “We

were in good position. Our

of keeping [Lumpkin] out

on that strong defense to

Moledor signs
to play college
ball at NC A&T
By Rio White

Dawson County High School held a signing day
event on Wednesday, Feb. 1, for senior football player
Kade Moledor, who signed his letter of intent to play
collegiately at North Carolina A&T.
“I’d like to thank God for putting me in this position
and putting people in my life to get me where I’m at,”
Moledor said. “I’m thankful every day for my parents,
my family...my friends and teammates. I appreciate
my coaches for also pushing me to be the best.”
Moledor played primarily as a linebacker during his
Tigers career, spending his senior season taking up the
additional role of running back.
His efforts in the 2022 season, which included 90
tackles, five sacks and 532 rushing yards on 101 car
ries, resulted in him being awarded as the Team MVP,
a First Team All-Region selection, and the Region
7-3A Defensive Player of the Year.
According to head coach Sid Maxwell, what made
Moledor such an important player for the Tigers went
far beyond the stat sheet.
“He’s an outstanding young man. Sometimes you
can make leaders, but in this situation, [Moledor] was
bom to do what he does — and that’s lead others,”
Maxwell said. “Each day he came in to get better. Not
only did he get better, but he would make those around
him better and people would try to be more like him.”
Moledor’s leadership helped set the standard for the
football team’s region title-winning season, with his
efforts contributing to two shutouts and just 48 points
given up against six region opponents.
As critical as his defensive role was, his ability to
