Plan
“Think about that com
prehensive plan as a book;
there’s a vision, critical
issues that need to be
addressed, future land use
and then the short term
work program; what are
the actual projects the city
is going to be working on
for the next five years,”
Rothwell said.
From now until July or
August, a steering com
mittee of community
stakeholders will meet
once a month to review
the city’s current plan and
give their input and sug
gestions to update it. This
steering committee is
made up of individuals
from across the city and
county, including mem
bers of the city’s planning
commission, historical
preservation commission
and downtown develop
ment authority, representa
tives from the chamber of
commerce and from the
county’s government,
business owners and life
long residents of the city.
“Having this amount of
input is fantastic; that’s
what makes this success
ful,” Rothwell said to the
assembled stakeholders
during the kickoff meet
ing.
The steering committee
will also provide several
ways to collect input from
city residents and others
who have a vested interest
in Dawsonville, including
holding a public input
meeting and sending out
surveys.
After these several
months of meetings and
collecting public input, the
city will submit the updat
ed plan to the Department
of Community Affairs
(DCA) for review, and the
council will then vote to
officially adopt the plan by
its Oct. 30 deadline. The
plan will then be used to
help guide the city council
and the city’s other boards
and commissions in future
decisions for the city.
“When it’s done, it’s
continually in use,”
Rothwell said.
