Bed-building event to benefit kids in need
By Erica Jones
ejones@dawsonnews.com
On Saturday Feb. 25, local
nonprofit Sleep in Heavenly
Peace will hold its first bed
build of 2023, giving communi
ty members a variety of ways to
pitch in and help give local chil
dren a place to sleep at night.
Sleep in Heavenly Peace is a
nationwide organization dedi
cated to providing beds for chil
dren who don’t have one. The
Dawsonville chapter serves chil
dren in Dawson, Lumpkin and
North Forsyth.
During bed builds like the one
that will take place on Feb. 25,
volunteers start with raw lumber
and help to sand, saw, drill and
stain it to make it into beds
ready to deliver to children.
The upcoming build will start
at 8:30 a.m. on Feb. 25 at the
Dawsonville Farmers Market
Pavilion, located at 86 Allen
Street. According to information
provided by the organization,
the goal is to build 20 beds to
deliver to local children. There
will also be a couple of teams
scheduled to go deliver beds the
same day.
In addition to the bed build
ing, Sleep in Heavenly Peace
will also hold a linen drive. The
organization only delivers new
beds, mattresses and linens to
children, so during the build
community members are
encouraged to bring new twin
sheets, pillows and blankets to
donate.
“We have been lucky enough
in the past to have all our linens
donated,” Co-Chapter President
Patty Kurz said. “It is a great
way for the community to get
involved and it allows us to use
more money for materials such
as lumber, hardware and mat
tresses.”
Those interested in donating
sheets, pillows or blankets can
drop them off during the build
or donate online at https ://inter-

February is a month known
for Valentine’s Day and love,
and it makes the perfect time to
plan a fun getaway for yourself
and your special someone.
The Dawson County area has
a variety of fun activities to do
with your special someone, from
outdoor activities, unique restau
rants and a close proximity to
other cities and towns that would
make a perfect day trip.
Here are a few of our favorite
ideas.
Eat a romantic dinner
at The Blue Bicycle
restaurant
The Blue Bicycle is one of
Dawsonville’s truly unique small
town restaurants. The sit-down
restaurant serves moderately
priced, delicious meals and
offers a variety of beer, wine and
cocktail options.
The restaurant’s menu blends
French-style food with a south
ern flair that you can’t find any
where else in the county.
All of the meals at the Blue
Bicycle are made with fresh
ingredients and range from sim
ple salads and soups to filets and
seafood. Tucked away near the
outlet mall in Dawson County,
the Blue Bicycle can make a per
fect date night restaurant.

Blue Bicycle including its menu

Stay the night at
Amicalola Falls Lodge
Another of Dawson County’s
outdoor attractions is Amicalola
Falls, which boasts a whole slew
of hiking trails and outdoor
adventures.
You can hike, zipline, or par
ticipate in a variety of other
activities like watching a Birds
of Prey show.
You can then stay the night at
the Amicalola Falls Lodge,
which boasts rooms with views,
private cabins and a restaurant
that offers a unique dining expe
rience.
For the truly adventurous cou
ple, take the trail from the top of
the falls up to the Len Foote
Hike Inn, a back country inn
only accessible via the hiking
trail. The five-mile trail will take
you past picturesque woodland
views to the sprawling lodge
where you can shower, eat deli
cious homemade meals and stay
the night in the rustic bunkhouse.
