Dawson County’s varsi ty baseball team clinched the fourth seed in Region 7-3A last week after fall ing just short 11-10 in their final regular season game on Friday, April 21. As a result, the Tigers played Region 8 champi ons Franklin County in round one of the Class 3A playoffs, with the two teams facing off in a dou bleheader on Monday, April 24, in Camesville. Dawson went into last week’s series against White County with an out side chance to snag the No. 3 seed in the region, with Lumpkin County ulti mately hanging on to that spot. After the first two games of their respective series, the Tigers were one game behind the Indians but owned the tiebreaker after winning two of three games against Lumpkin earlier in the season. Dawson beat White 6-5 on Tuesday, April 18, before giving senior Colton Rucker a memora ble final home game in an 11-3 win on Thursday. But Friday’s road game in Cleveland was by far the most dramatic, with the Tigers staging a late rally through both a timely offensive spark and a nota ble relief effort on the mound. The Tigers’ No. 1 singles player Grant Ledbetter was locked in a tight battle, narrowly losing the first set and fighting to get back on level terms. Earlier, Chase Cofield fell in his sin gles bout while the doubles team of Connor Woody and Ely Hutching couldn’t come back in their match. While Ledbetter tussled with his heavy-hitting opponent, sophomore Bailey Swafford was showing some of his best form all season. Swafford used his speed and confident baseline play to keep just ahead of a skilled opponent. Gaddis wins deciding match to send Lady Tigers tennis to 2nd round By Rio White riowhite@dawsonnews.com On a hot afternoon, Dawson County’s varsity girls tennis team hosted their first-round state playoff match on Tuesday, April 18, with the Region 7-3A No. 2 seed Lady Tigers facing Region 8’s No. 3 seed Stephens County. The two teams proved to be evenly skilled in many respects, splitting the first four singles and doubles matches. Lor Dawson, it all came down to junior singles player Marlee Gaddis, who had plenty of previ ous experience in decisive situations. Her coaches and team mates stood behind the court fence with nervous anticipation as she fought through the increasing heat and an early first-set deficit. Knowing that the team’s season was on the line, Gaddis crawled back from 2-5 to win the first set 7-6 and carry that important advantage heading into the second set. As if the scenario wasn’t tense enough, her second set proceeded to become a back-and-forth affair — with the score at 4-3 when the seniors on the team had to walk over to the football field for a joint Senior Night cere mony with the track and field team. While those seniors stood with their families not knowing about the sta tus of their season, Gaddis pulled through and won her second set 6-4, send ing the Lady Tigers to the Sweet 16. Soon enough, the good news was relayed and the See Girls Tennis 13B Dawson County High School held a signing day event on Wednesday, April 19, for senior foot ball player Cade Adams, who penned his letter of intent to play collegiately at Georgia Tech. “Lor me to get this D1 shot it took a lot faith in searching for an opportu nity to play at the next level you gotta be able to deal with criticism and rejection.
