Man pleads in fatal Applebee's fight
Roberts sentenced to 10 years in prison, 30 years on probation

The Dawson County man
charged with fatally injuring
19-year-old Kaleb Duckworth
two years ago will no longer go
to trial.
Daniel Lee Roberts, 22,
entered a negotiated plea of
guilty in his case involving
Duckworth during a May 30
hearing in Dawson County
Superior Court.
Roberts was previously
accused of getting into a fight
with Duckworth at the Dawson
Roberts Duckworth
County Applebee’s on July 25,
2021, and punching the
Lumpkin County teen with a
closed fist, causing severe brain
trauma, according to his indict
ment.

Roadwork
to close two
county routes

Portions of two Dawson County roadways
will soon temporarily close for different proj
ects, County Manager Joey Leverette said at
the Board of Commissioners’ June 1 work
session.
About a one-third-mile stretch of Blacks
Mill Road ending at Dawson Forest Road
will close starting Monday, June 12 for sewer
line and water main installations. This clo
sure is expected to last about three months,
Leverette said.
Then starting on Thursday, June 15,
Dawson Forest Road’s intersection with Ga.
53 and Thompson Creek Park Road will be
closed until Aug. 1 for construction of the
planned roundabout there, Leverette added.
Detours will be posted.

Pedestrian struck
in hit-and-run in
Dawson County

On Friday June 2, local “celebrities”
donned aprons and picked up servers’
trays to help raise money for Dawson
County Family Connection.
During the “Celebrity Waiter” fundrais
er, hosted by Longhorn Steakhouse, com
munity members were given the chance to
purchase a tasty breakfast and be served
by local elected officials and other “celeb
rities” representing organizations across
the county.
This year’s list of servers included 18
people hailing from a long list of local
organizations, including Dawson County
Government, the Dawson County Sheriff’s
Office, the Rotary Club of Dawson
County, Dawson County Schools and sev
eral local nonprofits.

The victim of a weekend hit-and-run crash
in Dawson County is now recovering with
non-life-threatening injuries, according to
Courtney Floyd with Georgia State Patrol.
The driver of the sedan car allegedly
involved has been identified as a 17-year-old
female with no injuries, stated a preliminary
GSP narrative.
On June 3 at about 11:56 p.m., troopers
were dispatched to a vehicle crash involving a
pedestrian at the intersection of Dawson
Forest and Blacks Mill Valley roads in
Dawson County, according to the preliminary
narrative.
“A witness advised that he observed what
appeared to be two males walking partially in
the roadway while traveling west on Dawson
Forest Road,” the preliminary narrative stated.
