By Erica Jones ejones@dawsonnews.com Students at the University of North Georgia (UNG) are getting real-world investment experience, thanks to $50,000 from the UNG Foundation. According to a press release by UNG, the UNG Foundation receives and manages all charita ble gifts and grants on behalf of and for the benefit of UNG. With the $50,000 from the foundation, UNG students in the Student Investment Club are able to get real-world investment experience, investing in stocks in various sec tors through the Student Managed Investment Fund. “The money allows a sense of genuine risk to what we’re doing,” UNG junior Luke Atwood said in the release. “It takes in- depth analysis.” The students in the group also have a chance to hear regularly from financial industry guest speakers to provide a broader per spective. “This kind of group can pro vide students with hands-on expe rience with stock trading and business analysis,” Club Faculty Advisor Ning Wang said in the release. Most members of the Student Investment Club are enrolled in UNG’s business school, the release said, but the group is open to students pursuing any degree. “It’s been very interesting to have responsibility for the money we invest and learn what that entails. There’s always that inner desire to want to perform and do well and see the numbers grow,” Grace McCarthy, a UNG junior from Dawsonville who is pursu ing a marketing degree and who serves as the club’s chief informa tion officer, said in the release. “It was a little bit scary at first. But it’s very exciting to see how we can grow that and make it even better.” Erica Jones Dawson County News Janice Mauney, left, stands with her co-workers Tim and Cathy Couch on Jan. 18 after receiving her prizes for her dog Maggie Mae winning the Dahlonega Sunrise Rotary Club’s annual “Cutest Pet” contest. ‘Cutest Pet’ owner donates winnings to Humane Society in loving memory of her dog By Erica Jones ejones@dawsonnews.com Janice Mauney has worked as an accountant at Dawsonville-based firm Tim Couch CPA since 1998. When the firm received a flier for the Dahlonega Sunrise Rotary Club’s annual “Cutest Pet” contest at the end of 2023, Mauney’s co-workers encouraged her to enter her bullmastiff, Maggie Mae, in the contest. Tragically, Maggie Mae was diagnosed with mast cell cancer and passed away suddenly and unex pectedly during the voting period of the contest. So when voters selected her as the winner anyways, Mauney took the opportu nity to make a difference in her beloved pet’s name. During the Jan. 18 meet ing of the club, Mauney was presented with her winnings: a plaque, certifi cate, photo sign of Maggie Mae and a $350 prize. As soon as the announcement was made, Mauney in turn called forward a represen tative of Dahlonega’s TLC Humane Society, giving Photo courtesy of Janice Mauney Mauney’s bullmastiff Maggie Mae won the Dahlonega Sunrise Rotary Club’s annual “Cutest Pet” contest. her the check to use at the shelter in honor of Maggie Mae. “I would like to donate the money to the TLC Humane Society,” Mauney announced, prompting applause and misty eyes from those in attendance. Getting to pass on the winnings to help make a difference for the humane society is a great way to be able to honor Maggie Mae’s memory, she told DCN, recounting how her dog loved being around people, taking photos and dressing up with sunglass es, hats and more. “It’s in her memory — and she can be in the angel contest next year,” Mauney said. The club also donated an additional $700 check to the humane society, bring ing the total up to $1050 to help support the shelter’s mission in the community. FROM 1A Weisgerber interview at issue. The judge also reiterat ed that the curative instruction given after the defense’s objection to the video had to be vague “only because the actual terms rape could have further aggravated the initial statement.” The instruction’s vagueness also allowed jurors to disregard more of the witness statement, the judge wrote. The defendant did not object to the curative instruction when it was given or subsequently renew the motion related to the video statement at hand. The judge found no error in denying the defense’s motion for a mistrial, noting that “to the extent any error in the curative instruction or failure to grant a mistrial at the time of the statement, that the error was harmless.” As a reminder, Bearden wrote that Weisgerber was acquitted of child moles tation, the most heinous charge in his case, adding that the video statement would’ve been “most prejudicial” to that charge and that any error would be harm less on the other 10 charges “because the evidence was overwhelming on those counts.” “While [the] defendant alleges cumula tive error, the court finds that there was but one actual statement in question in this case, although leading to two separate rulings, one on the motion for mistrial, and one on the cumulative instructions, but which were part and parcel of one evi dentiary question,” Bearden wrote. “The court, having found no error on those related and intertwined issues, finds no cumulative errors.” King Crossword ACROSS 50 Sociable and 23 Razor sharp 1 Hot tub lively ener 4 Pack (down) 55 "Caught ya!" 25 Algerian port 8 Honeycomb 56 Medicinal 26 During division plant 27 Red planet 12 Joke 57 Vogue rival 28 Mrs. Dithers of 13 Teen fave 58 Singer Phair "Blondie" 14 Celestial bear 59 Reporter's 29 African ante 15 Capote nick quest lope name 60 Workout count 30 "Hud" actress 16 Difficult prob 61 Mimic Patricia lem 31 Faxed 18 Celery unit DOWN 35 Equine homes 20 Pantheon 1 Boot camp 38 Butterflies member VIPs 40 Language suf 21 Morays 2 Section fix 24 Twilight, poeti 3 Water, in 42 High school cally Mexico subj. 28 "Bravo!" 4 Hearts, slangily 45 Declare 32 Wry Bombeck 5 Big fuss 47 "The Lion 33 Raw rock 6 Calendar abbr.
