Dawson County’s new est addition, Barnes & Noble Booksellers, officially opened on May 1. The new location of Barnes & Noble is located at 136 Marketplace Parkway Suite 700 and has been in the works since the beginning of the year. Store Manager David James Ray Mason, who previously worked for 10 years at the next closest Barnes & Noble location in South Forsyth, said that one of the most common questions he used to hear at that store was when they were going to open one in Dawson County. “One of the most frequently asked questions was ‘when are you getting a store in Dawsonville’ and so we’re finally fulfilling those wishes for people,” Mason said. “It’s a need in this community to have a place to buy books, buy music — just a communal space for people to come together to read and to find what they’re looking for.” Barnes & Noble held a grand See Bookstore 14A Dawson County’s new Barnes & Noble officially opened for business on May 1. By Julia Hansen juliahansen@dawsonnews.com Onlookers avidly watched from Dawson County’s War Hill Park Wednesday as over 100 soldiers in the U.S. Army’s 5th Ranger Training Battalion made a spectacular splash into Lake Lanier. Parachute-clad soldiers leapt from UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters into the lake as part of the annual “Ranger Jump” water landing exercise at War Hill Park on May 1. While the soldiers jump monthly, Sgt. 1st Class James Duckworth explained the aquatic event must be timed just right to account for factors like wind and water temperature. “We get to do this once a year. It’s a great opportunity for us to basically showcase a skill that we don’t nor mally get to practice,” Duckworth said. Just as in previous years, Black Hawks launched from War Hill Park’s boat ramp parking lot, looping away from the park area before fly ing straight over Lake Lanier. Soldiers took turns jumping out of the helicopters from heights of 1,000- plus feet, using parachutes, the wind and vibrant flares from boats below to guide them. The board approved Dawson County’s acceptance of a $96,695 grant for a fixed genera tor on April 18. The federal government will pay $87,025.50 or 90% of the grant, while the state will pay $3,867.80. The county match for the grant will be $5,801.70 or 6%. By Erica Jones ejones@dawsonnews.com On May 2, local emergency responders received a check for over $7,000 to be used for whatever they need, thanks to an annual gun raffle fundraiser by local financial planner Alex Williams and local gun store Appalachian Armory. Each year Williams, who is a financial plan ner with the Piedmont Group, hosts the fund raiser to raise money for the local fire depart ment. Through her part- nership with Appalachian Armory, raffle participants pur chase tickets to be eligi ble to win one of 31 guns. Each day throughout the month of April, a gun winner was chosen from the pool of tickets. This year, the raffle raised a total of $7,846.28, which Williams presented to Dawson County Fire Chief and EMA Director Troy Leist on May 2. According to Leist, the funds will help to fill the gaps and meet needs that his department may have come up that aren’t covered in the annual budgeted funds.
