The Board of Commissioners discussed the multi-pronged pro posal during their May 2 work session. The Lumpkin Campground Road corridor was studied in 2019 and again in 2023. The 2019 study recommended fixes specifically at the route’s inter sections with Ga. 53 and Grizzle and Industrial Park Road, Public Works Director Robert Drewry said Thursday. First Gospel in the Park draws crowd to downtown By Erica Jones ejones@dawsonnews.com On Saturday, May 11, the City of Dawsonville held its first Gospel in the Park event, bringing several well-known Southern gospel music artists to the downtown area to put on a free concert for the communi ty. The event took place at the city’s Main Street Park and featured per formances by Randy and Mandy Perry, The Raven Welch Band, Debra Perry & Jaidyn’s Call and Karen Peck & New River. Each of the artists took turns playing sets of songs before playing all together for the final set. Gospel in the Park also featured several local food trucks, as well as a pop-up gift market with local vendors selling wares perfect for Mother’s Day gifts. Future teachers honored during DCHS ceremony By Erica Jones ejones@dawsonnews.com On Tuesday, May 7, seven graduating seniors from Dawson County High School signed certificates of intent to go to college and pursue degrees in education. During the school’s annual Future Educators Signing Day, each of the students expressed her desire to become a teacher and was given the chance to talk about where she plans to go to college, what grade level she would like to teach one day and which teacher or teachers have most influenced her in her own education experi ence. The seniors then signed their certificates in the presence of their family and friends, as well as teachers and administrators, and were given special stoles to wear with their robes at graduation. The seven graduating DCHS seniors who were honored during the Future Educators See Teachers 14A Woman booked, facing charges of meth trafficking By Julia Hansen juliahansen@dawsonnews.com A Dawson County woman was recently apprehended after a traf fic stop that resulted in the discov ery of over 7 0 0 grams o f methamphetamine, stat ed a May 8 press release from the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office. Lumpkin County dep uties conducted a traffic stop for Courtney Yother, 32, on April 25, the release stated. During the traffic stop, an LCSO K9 alerted on Yother’s car, so deputies searched the vehicle. As a result, they found and seized about 730 grams of meth. The traffic stop was based on a drug investi gation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Appalachian Regional Drug Enforcement Office. Deputies arrested Yother on scene for allegedly trafficking meth. She remains at the Lumpkin County jail without bond, the jail roster showed. DCN will continue to follow this case.
