After advancing from the Region 7 championship to the State Sectionals, a select group of Tigers made it to Albany to the State Finals, where only the best in each event compete. Dawson podium finishers • Colton Land (Discus, fourth place) - The junior, who was the Region 7 discus champion, cemented himself among the elite throwers in Class 3A. He now holds the three longest dis cus distances in school history, with a top mark of 157 feet, 8 inches. • Ema Bliss (High Jump, fourth place) — Another junior who has made steady improve ments in the past year, Bliss hit the five-foot even mark yet again in Albany. That height has her currently tied for the school record — something she will be looking to break in her senior year. • Luke Lowe (Pole Vault, fifth place) — The senior wrapped up his Tigers career with a well- earned trip to the podium after clearing 11 feet, 6 inches. Competing among a tough 3A field, Lowe was able to finish on a high note. • Anna LeCave (800-meter, sixth place) — The school- record holder in this event, LeCave put together a strong effort to put a bow on the signa ture race during her Dawson career. She ran a time of 2:28 to clinch consecutive trips to the State Linals podium in this event. • Addison Smith (3200-meter, eighth place) — A rising star on the team, the sophomore made strides in both the mile and 2-mile races this season. But her steady gains in the 2-mile earned her a trip to Albany, where she posted a time of 12:40. Final signing day of year included prestigious musical achievement By Rio White riowhite@dawsonnews.com Dawson County High School held a signing day ceremony on Wednesday, May 8, honoring three student-athletes who are continuing their careers at the collegiate level. This event also included a fourth signing for musician Hayden Reidling, who was recently accepted into the Berklee College of Music. Reidling, whose talents range from marching band drumline cap tain to award-winning bluegrass gui tarist to DCHS choir member, con tinues a legacy of DCHS students thriving in the musical field is believed to be the first DCHS stu dent accepted into a musical conser vatory. The three athletes included: • Sawyer Bearden (Baseball) — Truett McConnell University A versatile athlete who was a var sity starter for DCHS baseball and football, Bearden shined as a senior in both sports. In baseball, his strong hitting — which included 9 hits and 6 RBI in the Tigers’ first four state playoff games — was crucial to the team’s success. He played multiple positions for the football team on both sides of the ball. • Trey Harvey (Baseball) — Young Harris College A longtime starting pitcher for Tigers baseball, Harvey received consecutive Lirst Team All-Region honors in his junior and senior sea sons and maintained a Region 7 ERA under 2 in those two years. He was also the varsity basketball team’s leading scorer for two seasons, earn ing All-Region accolades in that sport as well. • Tyler Tangel (Cross Country) — Maryville College Lor the past two seasons, Tangel has been the talisman of DCHS cross country, consistently pushing himself and his teammates to become better every week. He had consecutive top- 10 individual finishes at the Region 7 championships, placing eighth in 2022 and seventh in 2023. He also helped the team earn back-to-back sixth-place results at the state cham pionship race. All-Region honors led by Joshua Priest By Rio White riowhite@dawsonnews.com Dawson County’s var sity baseball team, after finishing runner-up in Region 7-3A, earned some strong representa tion on this year’s All- Region list Eight Tigers found themselves with postsea son honors, led by pitcher Joshua Priest. The senior was named as Region 7 Pitcher of the Year after compiling a 5-0 region record, 1.54 ERA, and 54 strikeouts. Lellow hurler Trey Harvey was also on the Lirst Team list after going 4-1 with a 1.78 ERA and 37 strikeouts. On offense, senior Julian Homer and junior Jacson Rickett earned Lirst Team honors. Horner was the team’s leading power hitter, pos sessing a momentum changing swing that could spray the ball in several directions, includ ing some home runs. Rickett was a model of consistency for the Tigers, with the lefty rou tinely making hard con tact and finding gaps with ease. He wrapped up his season with 48 hits and a .417 batting average. Tigers goalkeeper Bryce Beach was named Region 7 Player of the Year on the boys side after a stellar senior season. His sharp skills were instrumental in Dawson County’s 5-1 region record.
