Pound and his business partner finished the play house in January, but when little Matthew went in for his second heart surgery in February he ended up having to stay in the hos pital longer than expect ed, for a total of nine weeks. So, with the surgery finally behind him, Payne’s family held a “Make-A-Wish party”, complete with a “ribbon cutting ceremony” to celebrate his brand-new playhouse on Saturday May 18. A wide range of Matthew’s family and friends were there to cel ebrate with him, includ ing his teachers from Riverview Elementary School’s Exceptional Children’s Department and his occupational and speech therapists from Pediatric Thera Pea Services of Georgia and M&M Speech and Feeding Services. “We have some of his therapists here, and his teachers are here too,” Payne said. “If it wasn’t for these people, I don’t know where we’d be — they’re family.” As their family and friends laughed and talk ed together in the Paynes’ backyard, Matthew was right in the middle of all the action, running from person to person and in and out of his new playhouse. “To have him here, being able to play, is the biggest thing — we just thank the good Lord for having him here running around,” Payne said. “Before his heart surgery he was slowing down playing and all, and now you can’t even tell he’s had any kind of heart surgery. He’s thriving with our family here.” And he absolutely loves his new playhouse, she said as she watched him play on the swing. Dawson County’s first Whataburger debuted in November 2023, a little over a month before Outback Steakhouse also opened in the area.
