Here’s what to know about the upcoming camp. Camp Invention is a nationally recognized summer camp program, geared toward teaching elementary school students lessons in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) principles in a fun, hands-on way. Dawson County has participated in Camp Invention for several years now, and this year the school sys tem will host the camp at Dawson County Middle school from June 24 to 28. Lunch each day will be pro vided by the Dawson County Schools Nutrition Department. According to a press release by the National Inventors Hall of Fame, which presents the camp each year, this year’s camp will have several different fun activities including: Let’s Glow: Creativity radiates as campers uncover the science of light through illuminating inven tions and glowing animals Prototyping Studio: Campers star as contestants on a game show where they mold, shape and trans form their ideas into amazing inventions In the Game: As campers create their own light-up game board, they team up to tackle athletics, design, business and invention Operation HydroDrop: Children embark on a global opera tion to help solve water challenges around the world Dawson County’s Camp Invention is open to children who are entering kindergarten through sixth grade, and camp registration costs $270 per camper. Support kids in Dawson during Celebrity Waiter fundraiser By Erica Jones ejones@dawsonnews.com On Friday June 7, local non profit Dawson County Family Connection will hold its annual Celebrity Waiter fundraiser, geared toward helping make a positive impact on children and families in Dawson County. Here’s what to know about the upcoming fundraiser. The Celebrity Waiter breakfast is scheduled to take place from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. June 7 at Dawson County’s Longhorn Steakhouse. During the event, local “celebrities,” who are peo ple from across the county who have been nominated by others in the community, will serve cus tomers a delicious meal, all in the name of raising money for the nonprofit. This year’s current list of “celebrities” who will be partici pating in the breakfast include Alexa Bruce, Alexandria Williams, Amanda Sheffield, Andrew Grigsby, Carol Tyger, Charlie McCall, Jessica Grigsby, Joanna Evans, John Shaffer, Justin Mitchell, Lee Rogers, Matt Payne, Melissa Rich, Pepper Pettit, Rachel Burton and Scott Yochum. Tickets for the breakfast are just $15 each and can be pur chased in advance or at the door on the day of the event. Early bird tickets purchased before May 31 include a free entry into a gift card drawing. Local busi nesses and organizations can also pre-order delivery for their group. Schools to provide summer meals to local families By Erica Jones ejones@dawsonnews.com While school is out this summer, the Dawson County School System will once again hold its Seamless Summer feeding program to provide healthy, daily meals to children in the community who need them. Here’s what to know about this year’s pro gram. This year’s summer feeding program will start on June 3 and will run weekly at several different locations in the county. These locations and times include: • Riverview Elementary School: June 3-14, Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. • Dawson County Middle School: June 3-14 and June 24-28, Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. • Dawson County High School: June 3 through July 25, Monday through Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. No meals will be served from July 1-5. No paperwork is necessary to receive summer meals, and children must be 18 or younger to receive free meals. Family members over the age of 18 are invited to purchase low-cost meals for $3.75. In addition to the daily meals, the school system will also offer three-day weekend meal boxes for Friday through Sunday. These boxes are available for pickup every Thursday at Dawson County High School and can be reserved online through the school system’s website. Photo courtesy of Unsplash City honors employees with service awards From staff reports During the May 20 meeting of the Dawsonville City Council, the mayor and council members recognized sev eral of the city’s employ ees with service awards for their hard work/ The council members recognized Planning and Zoning Admin Assistant Stacy Harris as the city’s April Employee of the Month, presenting her with a certificate to acknowl edge her accomplishment. Harris was selected for the honor by her fellow employees at City Hall. “This lady is a rock; she’s basically been han dling the Planning and Zoning department by her self for the last several weeks with some absenc es,” City Manager Bob Bolz said during the meet ing. The council also recog nized several of the city’s employees with service awards, recognizing them for their ongoing years of service to the city. During the council’s May meeting, they recognized Public Works Employee Hayden Harris for one year of ser vice to the city, Treatment Plant Operator Westin Lee for seven years of service and City Clerk Beverly Banister for nine years of service.
