Muenchen, who has taught physical education at Kilough Elementary for nearly 20 years, took the helm of Tigers soccer prior to the 2019 sea son. He led the team to a pair of state playoff appearances, including a trip to the Sweet 16 this season. Through good times and bad, the man known by many in the community as simply “Coach” has always believed in his players. “Every year, our guys have always fought to the very end of every match — whether we were down by a bunch or just a goal,” he said. “To be on this side of it, where we had a very good season, is very reward ing.” Muenchen is exiting his var sity coaching role to focus on See Muenchen 13B Patrick Muenchen spent six seasons as head coach of DCHS boys soccer. Rio White Dawson County News Swinging for success Tigers celebrate track success with awards ceremony By Rio White riowhite@dawsonnews.com The Dawson County High School varsity track and field program wrapped up its 2024 season with an awards ceremony that recognized the many achievements made by Tiger athletes. Many individuals stood out during the course of the season, with head coach Arron Haynes reporting that around 80% of those who participated at the Region 7-3A championships in April earned person al best marks. Two juniors won the team’s MVP awards, with Emory Lail winning the male award and Ema Bliss winning the female award. Lail was an integral part of the boys 4x800 relay team that qualified for the State Sectionals. He also made big strides as a distance runner in the mile and 2-mile races. But his biggest individual achievement was making a run to State in the 800-meter race — an event that always has a stacked field in Region 7. DCHS girls finish fourth at state golf championship By Rio White riowhite@dawsonnews.com Hot conditions at the LaFayette Golf Course didn’t stop the Dawson County varsity girls golf team from finding success at the Class 3A State Championship, with the Lady Tigers finishing fourth out of 12 teams. The team, after not qual ifying for state the previ ous two seasons, put forth their best efforts with this opportunity to shine. Senior Samantha Dewendt led the way for the team, concluding her Dawson career on a strong note. She posted an open ing round score of 78 to place the team among the elite in the field. In the face of increasing temper atures, she had a second- round score of 86 that earned her a fifth-place individual finish out of over 50 golfers with an aggregate of 164. “I approached state just like any other tournament I’ve played,” she said. “I worked on my weaknesses from area and some small things from my swing. Towards the end of the second round, it crossed my mind that it was my last high school tourna ment, but I still had golf to play.” Dewendt, who has signed to play golf for Columbus State, achieved her second straight top-5 finish at the state champi onship. Her hard work and perseverance have had a significant effect on her coach and the program as a whole. “Sam has been the anchor of the team the past three years, and it has been a privilege to be her coach,” head coach Tyler Baker said. “I can’t say enough good things about her. She was a major fac tor in Dawson County qualifying for the state tournament as a team this year.” Freshman Pearl Hughes also had a successful tour nament in LaFayette, fin ishing seventh individually after a two-day score of 169. Hughes, who was the Area 4-3A runner-up in April, will continue to be an integral part of the Lady Tigers. Freshman Pearl Hughes was a key player for the Lady Tigers all season, earning a seventh-place finish at the state championship.
