The Dawson County Planning Commission approved a setback variance for a commercial building within The Enclave at Dawson Forest development during their May 21 meeting. This portion of land tied to the variance is just over 17,000 square feet or 11.3 acres at the comer of Ga. 53 and Dawson Forest Road. The acreage partially borders the new roundabout at those roads and Thompson Creek Park Road. Development consultant Jim King said his client, developer Georgia 400 Industrial Park FFC, wanted a commercial building about 60 feet deep on the 11-plus acres. Schematics show an area with multiple proposed building suites. As for the variance, the client wanted to put a central alley or island of trees down the middle of the commercial and retail area parking lot, which would require an extra five-foot strip of land. Local celebrities’ raise money to help families during fundraiser On Friday June 7, Dawson County Family Connection held its annual “Celebrity Waiter” fundraiser at Longhorn Steakhouse. By Erica Jones ejones@dawsonnews.com On Friday June 7, local “celebrities” from across Dawson County volun teered their time to serve breakfast to community members at Fonghorn Steakhouse during Dawson County Family Connection’s annual “Celebrity Waiter” fundrais er. The annual event, which raises money to support local families through local nonprofit Dawson County Family Connection, gives local “celebrities”, or peo ple who are known in the community for their heart for the county and the work that they do, the chance to try their hand at being a waiter for the day. This year’s event included a long list of waiters representing many different facets of the community, including rep resentatives from Dawson County, the City of Dawsonville, the Dawson County Chamber of Commerce, and several other nonprofits, clubs and businesses. “We opened it up this year and actually had nomi nations from the public which made it a lot more fun, it opened our eyes to a lot more celebrities and their people who support them,” Dawson County Family Connection Coordinator Rebecca Bliss said. Community members were given the chance to purchase a delicious break fast for only $15 and to be waited on by the celebrities, and then in a friendly com petition the celebrities com peted to see who could raise the most money in tips by the end of the event and win the tide of “Celebrity Waiter of the Year”. This year’s “Celebrity Waiter of the Year” award winner was Alexandria Williams, who is a financial planner with the Piedmont Group and is also very involved in the Dawson County Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club of Dawson County and more. The Place is a nonprofit serving Dawson and Forsyth counties that aims to help its clients with their essential needs. One of the ways the nonprofit serves its clients is through its food pantry. This summer, The Place is holding a mobile food pantry at Dawson County High School (DCHS) to help provide food for families in need, particularly while their children are out of school and at home for the summer.
