Dawson County couple Sondra and Lance Perry recently hosted their annual “Perry Palooza” lakeside event from June 8-9 to raise money for nonprofit The Place’s food pantry in Dawsonville. The Place’s Dawson County outreach coordinator, Amy Palmer, holds up a children’s book, written by Sondra Perry. “Perry Palooza” event attendees could give $10 to The Place and get a lock to put on the Perry property’s bridge or a children’s book. People have pledged to donate $10,050 to the food pantry as of Wednesday, Lance Perry told DCN. No members of the public chose to comment at either public hearing. Increases in expenditures in this year’s initial budget, Covington said during the presentation, include the addition of 23 growth posi tions, 17 of which are instructional positions; revising pay scales which includes increasing pay for paraprofessionals, adjust ing administrative supple ments and adjusting the operations and technology scale; increasing the certi fied pay scale by $2,500 in accordance with pay scale raises signed into effect by Governor Kemp; step increases and, pending approval, a four percent increase to classified sala ries. The board voted unani mously, with Board Chair Nathan Ingram absent, to approve the initial budget following the second public hearing on June 11. Up next, the board will set its millage rate for the 2024-25 school year in August. Before setting the millage rate, the school system will also receive its final tax digest in late July. In accordance with state law, the board will hold three public hearings about the millage rate during a two-week time frame in August before voting to approve the final rate. food pantry at 829 Ga. 9 in Dawsonville. The Place is a nonprofit that serves families and indi viduals in need in Dawson and Forsyth counties. The Place’s Dawson County outreach coordi nator, Amy Palmer, helped collect donations and provide more infor mation about the nonprof it last weekend. Attendees had the option of making $10 donations and choosing either a book written by Sondra featuring the character “Henry the Heron” or buying a lock to put on the property’s nearby bridge. This year, in addition to the $10 donation option, Palmer had flyers avail able with a direct link to a fundraising portal that could be specifically tracked for the event. Some people even brought food or thrift store donations to the gathering. “They give back to where they live,” Palmer said, “and they’re just great supporters [of The Place] as well.” Activities during the two-day event included food trucks and ice cream, live music, arcade games, lake and pool swimming, fireworks Saturday and a fishing tournament Sunday. “Kids just had a ball, and folks appreciated having a nice place to get together,” Perry added. “We met many local folks we didn’t know that are now acquaintances, hope fully to grow into friends.
