Moonshining, racing and the Mafia to be featured in this upcoming TV show to be filmed in Dawson County. By Erica Jones ejones@dawsonnews.com After several months of fund raising, television series “The Fabulous Flocks” is officially a go and will begin filming in Dawson County very soon, filmmakers said. “The Fabulous Flocks” will follow the story of the famous Flock family from Alabama, whose moonshine running led to the creation of NASCAR. The Flocks were key players in the moonshine running trade, and when NASCAR was offi cially created in 1948 several members of the family, includ ing the most well-known mem ber Tim Flock, were pioneers in the sport. Filmmaker Jeff Kaminski and his wife and costumer designer Allegra Deneroff made the decision to self-produce the series after several competi tions and festivals decided not to pick up the 60-minute pilot episode he wrote back in 2020. Kaminski, who is a descen dant of the Flock family, and Deneroff spent a lot of time in Dawson County filming demo footage for the series with well- known Dawson County com munity members David Sosebee and Dwight Bearden. “We filmed the demo footage off the Etowah River; there’s such a great community in Dawsonville and they’ve been very supporting as well so we’re looking forward to ideal ly we would film most of it there,” Kaminski told DCN at the end of 2023 after filming the demo footage. “My ances tors the Flocks probably drove moonshine for some of Dwight’s ancestors who made the moonshine, and then David’s dad Gober Sosebee knew the Flocks and raced with them.” After filming the demo foot age, the pair kicked off a crowd-finding campaign in 2023 to raise money so they can begin work on the pilot epi sode. Now, after several months of hard work, they have finally reached their funding goal and are set to begin filming on Saturday June 22. “We’ve been working hard to raise funding and have hit the threshold to start filming,” Kaminski said, “and have secured several locations in Dawsonville.” They will begin the filming process with a dirt race scene that they will film at the Banks County Speedway near Commerce, Georgia, and after that the rest of the filming should take place largely in Dawsonville. “We went location scouting a couple weeks ago and it was really nice just getting the lay of the land and imagining what it was like; we’re just very excited and passionate about this project,” Deneroff said. During the filming process, they are looking for community members to participate as extras and to continue to sup port the project. The biggest need for extras is for men and boys, Deneroff said, as that was the demographic that made up the bulk of the NASCAR audi ence in the time that the Flocks’ story took place. Anyone interested in being an extra can reach out to Kaminski and Deneroff via email at fabulousflocks@gmail. com or fill out the form at https://docs.google.com/forms/ d/1 CrlxjcDm5 AUXFnrCbbkPR uaYXmPNFk5D2Ae01BEh- g a c / viewform?pli= 1 &pli= 1 &edit_ requested=true. Filming is set to start on the morning of June 22 at the Banks County Speedway, with further filming dates to be announced after that. “We’re going to have cars from the 50s and I think it’s going to be really fun; I don’t think people even realize how fun it’s going to be,” Deneroff said. “It’s a lot of work and we’ve cast a lot of really cool people.” And the community has been excited and supportive of the project throughout the fundrais ing phase, she said, so she and Kaminski are excited to get the chance to now officially start the filming process. “As we’re making it people are even more excited than they were while we were fundrais ing,” Deneroff said. “The histo ry of Dawsonville is important, and it really does help the local economy; we’re hiring local people, supporting local busi nesses. I don’t think this is the end; I think there will be more racing stories.” To learn more about “The Fabulous Flocks”, go to https:// thefabulousflocks.com/. Blaze quelled at local waste facility By Julia Hansen juliahansen@dawsonnews.com A June 13 blaze at a waste and recycling center in southern Dawson County is now under control, Fire Operations and Training Chief Johnny Irvin confirmed to DCN. First responders successfully extinguished a fire at 400 Waste and Scrap Thursday. Personnel arrived at the facility, located on Daisy Drive, around 10 a.m. They found massive amounts of smoke and fire involving metal and different debris, according to Irvin. Firefighters set up hose lines, and they used 10,000 gallons of water to quell the fire. Personnel at 400 Waste and Scrap also used equipment to separate scrap piles and help crews reach where they needed to be to extinguish the fire. The response took roughly two hours, Irvin said. One firefighter overheated and was treated for dehy dration, but there were no other injuries or ill effects from the fire. No property damage was observed. In total, 14 people using three fire engines, two ten ders, two ambulances and three chief vehicles respond ed. The waste and recycling facilities did have precau tions in place for this type of incident, which is benefi cial, Irvin said. For now, the fire’s exact cause is undetermined, Irvin added. A fire investigator will go out to examine the scene.
