Part of the Captain D’s roof caught fire around lunchtime on June 20. Work had been ongoing on the back part of the roof, according to Dawson County Fire Operations and Training Chief Johnny Irvin. Emergency crews responded to the incident between 12:30-12:45 p.m. and were out there for about two hours. In total, 13 emergency vehicles and 20 personnel, with four volunteers, responded to the fire. Captain D’s will be closed “until further notice,” sig nage posted on the restau rant’s doors stated. The fire wasn’t extensive but caused some damage. Nobody was injured from the fire, Irvin said. The establishment will have to be re-inspected by the health department before reopening, Irvin added. The approved budget totals $26,365,275, which is an increase from last year’s $19.7 million approved budget. The total is made up of $17,000,000 in capital outlay funding, $3,212,300 in general funding, $3,026,240 in SPLOST and Georgia Racing Hall of Fame project funding and $2,269,600 in enter prise funding, as well as $301,200 in garbage department funding, $86,875 in Downtown 3 By Erica Jones ejones@dawsonnews.com On Saturday June 22, cheering and the sound of stock car engines revving filled the air at the Banks County Speedway. Dirt flew up from the track as four classic cars circled it, and audience members sitting on hay bales stood and yelled excitedly to cheer on their favorite drivers. While this may sound like a scene from a dirt track race from years ago, it was in reality a recreation of a race from the 1950s, back near the beginning of NASCAR racing.
