GJC Awarded $1 Million Grant
for Reducing Backlog of Cases
The Griffin Judicial Cir
cuit will receive $1,035,540
in the second and final
award cycle of American
Rescue Act Plan funding for
the 2023 calendar year, ac
cording to a recent an
nouncement from the
Judicial Council of Georgia.
The circuit, which in
cludes Fayette, Upson,
Spalding, and Pike counties,
received $1,135,685 in the
award cycle, bringing the cu
mulative total to $2,171,225
for 2023.
"The district attorney's
office is currently using
ARPA funds to staff an at
torney to help with the back
log," GJC DA Marie Broder
said.
“...Hiring challenges
continue to exist in various
circuits across the state,”
stated Supreme Court of
Georgia Chief Justice Mi
chael P. Boggs, chair of the
judicial council and the
ARPA committee. “Despite
the challenges, I’m very
proud of the work our
judges and court personnel
are doing throughout the
state in successfully imple
menting their grant-funded
case backlog plans.”
The council has awarded
Cycle 2 grants totaling
$15,371,004 to be distrib
uted among 24 judicial cir
cuits. The committee
accepted applications from
April 1-15, 2023, for the
award period beginning
June 1, 2023 and ending on
Dec. 31, 2023.
The committee has pre
viously awarded more than
$39 million to 37 judicial
circuits for calendar year
2023 funding. With this
round of awards, 45 of Geor
gia’s 50 judicial circuits will
have received grants since
the program began on Jan.
1, 2022. In calendar year
2022, grants totaling
$44,147,105 were awarded
to 42 of the 50 judicial cir
cuits.
Funding decisions are
based on demonstrated
need as long as funding re
mains available. The Com
mittee is scheduled to accept
applications for CY 2024
funding in September 2023.
Georgia’s judiciary oper
ated under a Statewide Judi
cial Emergency Order from
March 2020 through June
2021. The order placed nec
essary limitations on court
operations to protect the
health and safety of those
working in and coming to
courthouses during this
time, but also resulted in a
backlog of criminal and civil
cases, particularly those re
quiring jury trials to resolve.
In October 2021, Gov.
Brian Kemp announced the
allocation to the judicial
branch of $110 million of
ARPA funds to address
backlogs of court cases, par
ticularly cases involving se
rious, violent felonies. The
judicial council is admin
istering $96 million of that
total for eligible courts,
prosecutors, and related
agencies.
The remaining $14 mil
lion in ARPA funds was allo
cated to the Georgia Public
Defender Council for grants
to public defenders.
The funds are awarded on a
calendar year basis and all
funds allocated to the judi
cial branch must be spent by
Dec. 31, 2024.

With summer under
way and children out of
school for vacation, Peach
tree City Library launched
a way for residents to enjoy
the recreational disc golf
course and “play their
way.”
This year, PTC Library
launched a system that al
lows visitors to use their li
brary cards to check out a
disc to try their hand at
disc golf.
To check out discs and
join the fun, visitors must
present their PINES library
card at the library. Then,
they can grab a frisbee and
play nine holes on the
newly updated disc-golf
course.
The course is located in
scenic Village Green Park
adjacent to the library/city
hall complex. The course
was recently transformed,
courtesy of well-known
disc golfer Kevin McCoy.
Representatives from
Peachtree City noted that
disc checkout is limited to
same day play only.
