Commissioners con
tinue working toward allow
ing a drug abuse treatment
facility into Fayette County
with the approval of three
related ordinances and held
the first of two public hear
ings for an application for a
treatment facility to be op
erated at 1008 Highway 54
West during the July 27
meeting.
Attorney Adam Kaye,
who last spoke to commis
sioners regarding the topic
during the June 22 commis
sion meeting, submitted a
zoning request for the detox
facility in March, at which
time the county did not have
such special use within the
zoning ordinance.
The first ordinance
amendment discussed on
July 27 was to provide
procedures for special use of
property, which County At
torney Dennis Davenport
says will provide regulation
of special uses at the local
level, as well as incorporat
ing language existing in
state law providing ad
ditional regulations.
The ordinance was
unanimously approved.
Commissioners then de
bated an ordinance amend
ment to add “drug abuse
treatment facility” as a spe
cial use of property, which
included conditions for such
a facility, like a minimum
three-acre lot size, a 50-foot
vegetated buffer, eight-foot
privacy fence along bound-

Town of Tyrone
Proposes Increase
In Property Taxes
The Tyrone Mayor and
Town Council announced
last week that property tax
collections will increase 9.41
percent compared to last
year, due to a need for a mil-
lage rate increase above the
state-defined rollback mil-
lage rate calculated after the
tax digest is prepared by the
Fayette County Tax Asses
sor’s Office.
During budget prepara
tion, town officials com
mitted to maintaining its
maintenance and opera
tions millage at a rate of
2.889 mills. As was the case
last year, the assessed value
of the new construction and
existing real and personal
properties within the town
limits have increased, and a
rollback millage was cal
culated at 2.626 mills.
Georgia Law requires
that a government roll back
the millage rate to a number
of mills that will produce
the same number of dollars
in property tax revenue
from the prior year.
Tyrone’s net M&O mil
lage rate has been the same
for 16 years, despite vast
fluctuations in economic
factors, according to offi
cials. The proposed increase
in property tax revenue,
year over year, amounts to
$160,566 or 9.41 percent.
The total number of dollars
anticipated to be collected
in property tax for 2023 is
$1,866,456.
Before the town council
can set a final millage rate at
a council meeting on Aug.
