Fayetteville Wins GMA
Visionary Cities Award
The City of Fayetteville
has been named a 2023 Vi
sionary Cities Award recip
ient by the Georgia
Municipal Association and
Georgia Trend Magazine.
City leaders were presented
with the award at the recent
GMA Cities United Sum
mit, held Jan. 26-29 in At
lanta.
Fayetteville’s award was
earned by the City Hall &
City Center Park project,
which judges said was “a
testament to the City’s ded
ication to community en
hancement and civic
engagement.” Both the new
city hall and City Center
Park opened in June 2021.
The renovated bus barn
and gym buildings, which
are now home to restau
rants, event space, and a
church congregation,
opened later that year. The
adjacent Walton Fay
etteville mixed-use devel
opment opened in 2023.

Nellie Mae Rowe Honored in Posthumous Tribute

To kick off Black His
tory Month, The Colorful
Arts Society, Inc., a non
profit that promotes mul
ticultural arts, honored the
life and works of Fay
etteville native Nellie Mae
Rowe.
The celebration was
held on Jan. 28, and CAS
presented a memorial
bench at Rowe’s gravesite,
followed by a screening of
her documentary, This
World is Not My Own. The
documentary was 97 mi
nutes long and filled with
stories of her motivations
and visions through her
artwork.
The event concluded
with a light refreshment
reception.
While Rowe spent the
majority of her life work
ing and exploring, with her
retiring to Vinings, her bu
rial site is in Fayetteville at
Flat Rock African Method
ist Episcopal Church,
which is the oldest Black
church in in Fayette
County.

Ceremony for 'Four Chaplains'

In a solemn ceremony on Feb. 3, Amer
ican Legion Post 105’s auxiliary unit held an
event that commemorated the lives of “The
Four Chaplains” at the log cabin in Fay
etteville.
The event began with a welcome and in
vocation by Zack Cooper, followed by the
Pledge of Allegiance, led by Chloe Hunter,
Arnahia Marquez, and Lizzie Hunter of Girl
Scout Troop 309G.

Charged After
Two Stabbings
Following a report of
two individuals suffering
from multiple stab wounds
on Jan. 30, Thomas Boykin
of Fayetteville was arrested
by Fayette County Sheriff s
Office on multiple counts of
aggravated assault.
Emergency personnel
reportedly responded to a
call on Pine Knott Road at
approximately 7:38 p.m.
Jan. 30 after nearby res
idents reported that two in
dividuals arrived at their
home asking for medical as
sistance.

Firefighters Rescue
Residents Trapped
In Local Home
Fayette County Depart
ment of Fire and Emergency
Services recently saved the
lives of two people trapped
in a residential structure fire
in Long’s Mobile Home
Park.
After receiving the call
and arriving at the park, lo
cated on the 200 block of
Rivers Road, first re
sponders located a small fire
inside the home and aided
both occupants out of the
home with minimal damage
or extension, according to
county officials, with assis
tance from deputies of Fay
ette County Sheriff s Office.

gency Services officials warn
Firefighters on the scene
residents about the use of
space heaters, extension
cords, and power strips in
side a home, urging to al
ways plug appliances
directly into a wall outlet
and keep combustible mate
rials at least three feet away
from any heat source.
Fayette Fire and EMS
also reminds homeowners
to install smoke detectors on
every level of the home and
outside sleeping areas, test
smoke detectors each
month, and replace batteries
when the low-battery warn
ing chirp sounds, and at
least once per year, adding
that smoke detectors should
be replaced every 10 years.

and at the Feb. 1 meeting,
the City Council of PTC wel
comed Fayette County
Chamber of Commerce
President and CEO Leo
nardo McClarty, who dis
cussed his plans for the
county and PTC in his new
role.
McClarty, who took
charge of the chamber on
Nov. 6, 2023, highlighted
his “Five Es” initiative to im
plement in the chamber: en
gagement, encourage,
evaluate, enhance, and ex
pand.
