Old Hudson Plantation does a little bit of everything, between the shooting, they host events such as a Thursday eat and shoot and tournaments, they also do quail hunts, and raise and hatch the quail on site- there is simply something to do every day. The farm, which has been in the family since 1792, was acquired through land grants after the Revolutionary War. The Bush family originally came to Sparta from Dinwiddie County Va. Old Hudson Plantation began as a cotton farm in the 1900s. Today, of course, there is no cotton. The farm has a game bird hatchery where they raise their own quail and have hunts. They also do shooting year-round and also manage the pine tree population. Present day owner, Neal Bush, inherited the land after his grandfather ended up with a little over 1,000 acres. NMLS 690971. passed away it was divided up among Neal’s mother and her two siblings and she inherited the home place. There are other parcels of land not contiguous with Old Hudson Plantation that is owned by other family members. When Bush and his brothers inherited the farm Neal decided to buy them out. The original tract was 323 acres and since the 1980s the family has been buying up surrounding property that was family property and they are up to 1,600 acres. Today, Old Hudson Plantation rests among the piney woods in Sparta. A true shooters paradise, the plantation offers quail, chukkar and pheasant hunting, as well as skeet, trap, 5 stand, and a twelve station sporting clay course. They are members of the National Sporting Clays Association and the Georgia Sporting Clays Association and host many sanctioned tournaments throughout the year. Old Hudson Plantation offers a lot of unique things on their course and they try to change it often giving it a new flavor every week. If a shooter comes to shoot it a couple of times a week it will be different the next week. Old Hudson Plantation sells competition shotguns and unlike many places allows the customer to trial shoot the gun before purchasing it. The plantation sells brands of shotguns including: Fabarm USA, Caesar Guerini, Beretta, Browning, Rizzini, Blaser and Winchester. There are a lot of things that Old Hudson offers that people are not going to see at other places. A lot of gun clubs do not sell guns. Old Hudson Plantation probably has the largest inventory of a gun club, not a gun store, but a gun club where you actually come to shoot and shop. Beyond selling shotguns Old Hudson Plantation is a hatchery for quail. The Bush family purchases the eggs, and then incubates them for 24 days. When the quail eggs hatch the family sells them as a day old chicks. Old Hudson Plantation will keep about 18,000 quails for themselves. The family was trying to buy day old chicks to raise them at the plantation and they couldn’t find any so they decided there was a need for the hatchery. Quail hunting season runs from October to March. However, the farm has shooting events year-round. Weekly on Thursdays Old Hudson Plantation offers their Thursday eat and shoot. The event takes place at •5:30 p.m. during the spring and summer and changes to a lunch time option when daylight savings time goes out in November. Attendees shoot 50 targets and then have lunch or dinner on the grounds. The club also hosts benefit shooting events for area non profits such at Habitat for Humanity and the boy scouts. Old Hudson Plantation is home to many area youth teams including Gatewood, John Milledge Academy and Piedmont Academy. The youth team seasons run from August to December. The gun club offers shooting classes and has several instructors on staff. Everybody that visits Old Hudson Plantation feels the friendliness and the hospitality that the Bush family has worked to create at the farm. Often times, the family has shooters that come three or four times and week and they end up sitting for a couple hours after they finish shooting. The goal is to have everyone who visits Old Hudson Plantation feel welcome. ■ADVANCE ■ rehabilitation PHYSICAL THERAPY SERVING GREENE & TAKIYA APRIL SURROUNDING COUNTIES GRANT POWELL FOR OVER 10 YEARS!
