Maj. John Davis, Lt. Reenae Gray, and other officers from the Milledgeville Police Department’s Specialized Patrol Unit, will participate in the course, and help provide eligible applicants an opportunity to learn about firearms. Annual event promotes downtown businesses Alaina Minshew alaina@bbnews.today owntown Milledgeville wants families to come out on Friday to support local businesses and have fun. Milledgeville is hosting its fourth annual Hometown Celebration from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 18. “The Hometown Celebration is important to Main Street because it spotlights our down town and the downtown busi nesses,” said Deana Thornton, Milledgeville Main Street staff member, said. “It helps foster a sense of community pride along with helping boost our local businesses.” Joey Brumbelow, owner of Smoothie King, is part of the Hometown Celebration this year. He invites everyone to come check out all of the local businesses, new and old. “It’s an opportunity to invite people who don’t come to town everyday to come down and see all the businesses, as well as visit some of the old businesses they haven’t been to in awhile,” Brumbelow said. “It’s just a chance to let people come see things that maybe they don’t pass everyday.” SEI HOMETOWN »A2 BOC approves buying land for county annex WIL PETTY wil@bbnews.today The Baldwin County Board of Commissioners approved the purchase of five properties along North Columbia Street during its meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 15. Sammy Hall, chairman of the board, said the county has bought the land in order to start building a government annex. “We said we would be looking into building an annex for the courthouse because we are over crowded here,” he said. “This property is the intended location for that annex, assuming we don’t find any problems with that property.” According to documents provided to The Bulletin, the locations purchased were: 1601N. Columbia St., l66l N. Columbia St. and 351 Lakeside Dr. Another document shows the purchase of 1615 N. Columbia St. and 1617 N. Columbia St. Baldwin County Attorney David McRee referred to the tracts of land as the former location of the John Milledge Motel, a gas station that has closed down and a car wash. “What we need tonight is SEI COUNTY »A9 » GEORGIA FORWARD Young Gamechangers focus on Milledgeville WIL PETTY wil@bbnews.today Last week, the City of Milledgeville and Baldwin County welcomed the Young Gamechangers to the community. The leadership program brings 50 people under the age of 40 together as a way to solve problems in a selected Georgia community. GeorgiaForward, Atlanta-based nonprofit which works to promote cross-sector, statewide conversations and partnerships sponsors the event In previous years, the Young Gamechangers participated in Americus (Sumter County), Dublin (Laurens County,) Douglasville (Douglas County), Augusta-Richmond County and LaGrange (Troup County). For Milledgeville/ Baldwin County, the Young Gamechangers focused on four issues: education, retirees, branding/signage and economic development.
