Your hometown newspaper for Milledgeville and Baldwin County, Georgia. » GEORGIA MILITARY COLLEGE GMC Prep bus collides with train in NC WIL PETTY wil@bbnews.today A collision between a Georgia Military College bus and a train occurred in Swain County, N.C. at 11:50 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 22. According to a GMC Prep School post at approximately 3 p.m. six students were transported to local hospitals in the area for evaluation and all six were released. Two GMC faculty members were also taken to the hospital to be evaluated, and one was released. As of press time on Wednesday, Aug. 23, one staff member remains in a local hospital. GMC Director of Staff Dr. Jeannie Zipperer said his family is there with the faculty member and he remains in good spirits. “GMC has contacted all of the parents of the evaluated students,” according to the statement, written by Zipperer. Zipperer told The Bulletin that the incident occurred at the entrance of the students’ destination. “The trip will go on as planned,” she said. There were 77 students, all ninth graders and eight chap erones that were on the trip. Males and females were on separate buses, and it was the male bus that was impacted. The students were in route to the Nantahala Outdoor Center in Bryson City, N.C., for a field trip. Twin Lakes Library Director Stephen Houser and his team coordinated a viewing party on Monday for the commu nity to enjoy. Mary Vinson Library also hosted activi ties last week leading up to the eclipse. Attendees were able to participate in story time, solar system arts and crafts, and more. “This would have not been possible without Georgia College,” said Sarah Hamil of Twin Lakes Library System. Georgia College professor of physics and SEI ECLIPSE »A9 » CENTRAL STATE City council approves money for CSHLRA WIL PETTY wil@bbnews.today The Milledgeville City Council unanimously voted to provide $150,000 in additional funding to the Central State Hospital Redevelopment Authority. During the meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 22, the board was all in agreement on the decision with little discussion. However, this decision by the City Council was not made overnight. In late July Michael Couch, executive director of the Authority, approached the city council about being a secondary guarantor on a short term line of credit. According to documents acquired by The Bulletin, the money was to be for facilitating the first transfer of 328 acres and 40 buildings at the Central State Hospital Campus. Hice hosts Academy Service Day at Georgia Military Academy STAFF REPORTS The Milledgeville Police Department continues to investigate a burglary that occurred at 2 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 15. The incident occurred at Quality Pawn, which is located on the 900 block of South Wayne Street. Three people, who remain unidentified, are still at large. Major Mike Hudson, investigation commander for the MPD, said officers Eugene McKinney and Andrew Daniel responded to the call.
