Report: GC contributes $ 266M to local economy ALAINA MINSHEW alaina@bbnews.today Georgia College has increased its impact on Baldwin County’s economy at $266 million for the 2016 fiscal year, up from $235 million in 2015, according to a study commissioned by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia. “The entire state has an economic impact by the University System of about $16.8 billion, so this is big business for the state, especially for communities like ours,” Johnny Grant, director of economic development and external relations at Georgia College, said. “There were individual metrics measured, and the $266 million is just the economic impact SEE COLLEGE » A8 » ELECTION 2017 Candidates qualify for Nov. elections WIL PETTY wil@bbnews.today Election season is officially underway. Last week, candidates filed to run for mayor, city council and the Georgia Military College’s Board of Regents. So far, races are confirmed for the mayor ship, city council district 5 and district 6 for the GMC board of regents. All other spots are unopposed. Candidates for the mayor are: incumbent Gary Thrower and Mary Parham-Copelan. Parham-Copelan is a retired captain of the Georgia Department of Corrections and has held numerous jobs throughout Baldwin County. According to the narrative written by officer Joey Jones he arrived at 10:11 a.m. in reference to a need assistance call. He met with Brenda Talley, and an employee of the McDonalds, regarding the incident. “I asked Brenda what was going on, and she first advised me to ask (the other party),” accordingto the narrative. “I asked Brenda again, and she stated that she had issues with service because (other party) did not bring food to her and assisted other SEE DISORDERLY » A8 CARRIE MOON carrie@bbnews.today A special dedication ceremony was held Wednesday, Aug. 16 to celebrate the completion of two new pavilions at Walter B. Williams Park. Baldwin County Recreation Director Bill McNair publicly announced the completion of two pavilions at the ceremony. “These really turned out nice for all the people in Baldwin County to enjoy,” McNair said. The construction of these projects was made possible by the help of several county commissioners as well as Baldwin County Manager Ralph McMullen and other local citizens.
