Thursday, August 31,2017 The Baldwin Bulletin I Your local newspaper Page B9 Soccer coach helps train Guyana team GC Volleybairs Svehla named to All-PBC team Georgia College head soccer coach Hope Clark made a trip to the South American country of Guyana earlier this month, serving as a guest clinician for the country’s Ul7 National Team. Clark was on hand to help prepare the team for the CONCACAF Women’s Ul7 Caribbean Qualifiers Tournament. Head coach Akilah Castello and Technical Director Ian Greenwood invited Clark to work with the inexperienced squad, with particular focus on her expertise of goalkeeping. This marks the second time Clark has traveled to Guyana to work with youth soccer, her last visit coming in 2011. “I am grateful for the oppor tunity that the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) has provided me to help grow the sport of women’s soccer in their country,” said Clark. “The GFF has made great strides in the support of the Clark women’s game and its develop ment in Guyana since my last visit in 2011 working with the National teams. I enjoyed working with a very young group of women who displayed a lot of heart, effort and pride for their country and sport. The players and staff were very receptive and supportive and I am looking forward to continuing my work with the GFF, Technical Director Ian Greenwood, staff and players as they continue to develop women’s soccer in Guyana at the national level. Clark was on hand to help improve the youthful squad’s technical skill leading into the qualifying opener against Barbados Aug. 9 and to foster the love for the game, including the team motto of “One Team, One Dream”. Clark had to hustle back to the states to get the 2017 preseason started for Bobcat Soccer. Georgia College is currently nearing the end of their first week of preseason practice, and will get the season underway Friday, Sept. 1 at 3 p.m. taking on King College on the Carson-Newman University campus. For the first time in program history, Georgia College has placed a student-athlete on the Volleyball Preseason All-Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Team. The honor went to Taylor Svehla, of Cumming, on Monday. Svehla takes a slot on the seven-member team, joining five former All-PBC players, including one All-American and two All-Region honorees. The 2015 PBC Co-Freshman of the Year, Svehla played in all 31 matches for the Bobcats with 2.85 kills and 0.81 blocks per set in 2016. She was 10th in the conference in total blocks and seventh in solo blocks, also ranking 10th in the league in kills per set while boasting 17 matches of double-figure kills. A complete student-athlete, she was named to the PBC All-Academic Team in Svehla 2016, her first season of eligibility for the squad. Svehla and the Bobcats get their season underway at 1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 1. The Bobcats will host Emmanuel College, of Franklin Springs, Ga.
