The new pavilions, known as “Pavilion I” and “Pavilion II,” are two of three projects that have been coordinated by McNair, Officials from Georgia Department of Corrections agreed to allow inmate labor during the project, which gave the project the boost it needed to be completed quicker than originally anticipated. McMullen said he was honored to dedicate this facility for the Baldwin County community to enjoy. The materials purchased for the project were funded by SPLOST (Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax) dollars and McMullen extended his gratitude to the Georgia DOC, as their efforts in providing inmates to assist during construction allowed the organizers to get more for their money. McMullen publicly thanked everyone in attendance, including those who voted to extend SPLOST for another five years in Baldwin County. McMullen also wants citizens to know they are trying to get as much SPLOST monies and tax dollars as possible. That way the county can go as far as possible with recon structing the community. “Our goal in this is to improve the quality of life for the citizens of Baldwin County,” McMullen said. Commissioner Henry Craig, who is also a member of the local recre ation committee, publicly thanked the county road department and the recreation department, along with representatives, who encouraged the Department of Corrections to move the pavilion projects up on their list. French, who is also a member of the local recreation committee, shared his excitement with those in attendance and extended his gratitude to all of those who supported these projects as well. “When you travel and you get kind of bored, you can look off in the distance and see a park where children are playing and people are exercising by walking around; that’s a sign of a healthy community, and it makes you want to slow down and even stop to take a break sometimes,” French said. Commissioners Johnny Westmoreland and Emily Davis also addressed those in attendance to welcome the newest addition to the park. “This is an improve ment over what we had,” Westmoreland said. McNair said each pavilion, one located by the tennis court and the other near the ballpark, can be used for reunions and other events. The cost to rent is $125. The pavilions offer seating and picnic tables, restrooms and ceiling fans. McMullen said a swim ming pool, an aquatic center and other amenities are planned for Baldwin County in the near future. “The SPLOST was approved, thanks to the voters,” McMullen said.
