Wide receiver Terry Godwin delivered another strong perfor mance for the Bulldogs following his one-handed touchdown catch at Notre Dame. Against Samford, Godwin found pay dirt two times, bringing his season touchdown total up to three. Still, Godwin said the offense has work to do. Throughout the game against Samford, there were a few dropped passes and a turnover that gave Samford the ball in Georgia territory. “We are close,” Godwin said. “We haven’t met those expectations yet, but we are very close.” Godwin said issues such as penalties and receivers being at the right spot to make plays are some improvements they need to make. “We are right on the verge,” he said. “Next week or the week after, we will be at full velocity and meeting the expecta tions.” The junior from Hogansville has scored three touchdowns so far this season, more than he had in the previous two years. As far as last week’s match went, Godwin gave credit to freshman quarterback Jake Fromm as well as the running game for setting up the passing attack. “The running game is going to open up the passing game, the passing game opens up the running game,” Godwin said. “Whichever one starts clicking first is going to start opening up the other one.” Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said he was happy to watch Godwin’s improvements over the recent weeks. Smart said much of that success has come from more practice. “He has practiced so hard and blocked so well,” Smart said. “He blocks bigger than he is. He is not afraid to stick his face in there, and he’s always been that way.” During the matchup with Samford, Godwin led Georgia’s receivers with four receptions for 98 yards. His longest reception was 51 yards for a touchdown. “I didn’t see enough of that last year,” Smart said. “Now, we’re seeing it and he’s getting rewarded by catching the ball and making plays.” Oana ‘Leach R E A LT Y INC. I think he’s not afraid of taking chances and he’s not afraid to put himself out there and he just gives it all he’s got. He is getting his reads right and multiple checks at the line.” Georgia is set to host No. 17 Mississippi State. The Bulldogs of Starkville are fresh off a 37-7 win over LSU, which catapulted Mississippi State into the AP Top 25. Smith, during an inter view Monday, said Georgia can’t allow the hype of hosting a ranked team cloud the players’ prepara tion for Saturday. “At the end of the day, we have to keep the main thing, the main thing,” Smith said. “It is just the next game on the schedule and we just have to take care of it like it’s the next game on the schedule.” Georgia and Mississippi State will kick off at 7 p.m. on ESPN. Smart said he hopes to see Georgia’s fan base turn out in vocal support of his team. “We are excited for the matchup,” he said. “We obviously need to make the home atmosphere special, make it tough for them to play in. I am encouraging all the Dawg Nation to be there, which I know they will. Be loud and proud.” MARK SMITH JR./Staff Georgia wide receiver Terry Godwin (left) celebrates with quarterback Jake Fromm after scoring one of his two touchdowns against Samford last week. 969 Forsyth Street, Monticello $99,900 Historic 3bdrm/l 1/2 bath home.
