The Braves would fall 21-16 to the undefeated opponent. STAFF REPORTS After starting off 3-0, the Braves (3-1) lost for the first time this season to the Griffin Bears (4-0) on Friday, Sept. 15. A low scoring affair in the first half, both defenses were keeping the opposing side out of the end zone. A fumble recovery by the Bears with under a minute left in the second quarter allowed a 12 yard connection by Griffin’s Avious Nelson to Tristan Michael giving them the 7-0 lead at halftime. In the second half, quar terback Torez Hicks would run six yards to knot the score at 7 each midway through the third quarter. Almost a minute later, Griffin’s Nelson found Tae King for 60 yards to regain the lead 14-7. Early in the fourth quarter, Baldwin looked prepared to tie up the score again, but an inter ception at Griffin’s 15 yard line prevented it from happening. Approximately 5 minutes left in the game, Hicks run another sneak, this time for 2 yards to tie the game at 14. The Baldwin defense would then gain the lead for the Braves by forcing a safety with 3 minutes left in the game. With approximately a minute left in the matchup, Griffin’s Nelson connected to Michael again for a 20 yard touch down. Baldwin would have one last possession but was stopped by Griffins defense. The Bears then held on to win the game. Last year, when the Braves played Griffin at home, the Bears shut the team out 42-0, and dropped the Braves to .500. By comparison this year, they started out 3-0 and lost a tight match in Spalding County. Baldwin’s next game will occur Friday, Sept. 22 at home against the Evans Knights (2-2). Evans last week lost a match at Washington County against the Golden Hawks (1-3) 49-48 in overtime. The Braves lost to Evans last year 21-6 away. The match against the Knights will be the Braves’ last out of conference match before starting con ference play at Baldwin High against the Academy of Richmond County’s Musketeers (3-1). Griffin will look to defend its undefeated streak when they face the Whitewater Wildcats (2-2) out of Fayetteville. It will be the Bears’ homecoming match. » GEORGIA COLLEGE GOLF GC Golf starts season at Griffin Invite The Georgia College Golf squad started the 2017-18 season this week at the Griffin Invitational, hosted by Saint Leo University. The Bobcats finished No. 12 at plus-32 on the par-72, 7,176-yard Streamsong Resort. Results are unofficial as of Tuesday evening, as there were some unresolved issues with scoring at the tournament. The Bobcats got steadily better over the three rounds, firing 302,301 and 298. Bobcat freshman Daniel Davis, of Columbus, responded well to his first tournament in Blue and Green, showing the most consistent effort with rounds of 73, 76 and 72 for a No. 34 finish at five-over in the 90-golfer field. Sophomore Drew Duffle, of Evans, posted the best round for the Bobcats over the three days, a 68 in today’s action. Duffle combined that with a 76 and 79 for seven-over in a No. 41 finish. Third on the team and No. 52 overall was Justin Connelly, of McDonough, finishing 10-over with rounds of 79, 73 and 74. The 2016-17 All-Peach Belt Conference (PBC) honoree Thomas Hodges, of Monroe, and Bobcat newcomer Austin Maneilla, of Law- rencevile both finished at No. 67 at 16-over. Hodges shot rounds of 74, 79 and 79, while Maneilla had rounds of 80, 73 and 79. The University of West Florida, located in Pensac ola, ran away with the team title at 28 under par, topping the 15-team field and the second-place squad of Lime stone College (Gaffney, S.C.) by 10 strokes. UWF’s Jacob Huizinga also won individual honors at 14-under. The Bobcat golf team will be back in action Oct. 2-3, traveling to the University of North Georgia Fall Invi tational. GMC Continued from B1 for holding and on the next play, Landon Courson’s pass was intercepted at the 2. It didn’t take long for the Bulldogs to recover however, as a play later the Oglethorpe pass was picked off by Armanius White at the 10-yard line, and taken into the endzone for a score, which put GMC ahead 14-13 with 6:32 to go in the first half. Oglethorpe took over from the 32 and it looked like they were going to go three and out, but a fake punt was almost successful until the upback fumbled it at the 50-yard line, where it was recovered by Foston, his first of two recover ies and the second of five forced turnovers for the GMC defense on the night. Two quick runs, one of 15 by Milner and one of 12 by Mason, put GMC in the redzone and set up a 23-yard touchdown run from the wildcat by Milner. The Bulldogs successfully went for two and went The Georgia Military Prep ahead 22-13 to end the half. The Bulldogs started the second half at its own 20, and took almost six minutes off the clock, as an 80-yard drive, all rushing yards, capped off by a 9-yard Mason touchdown run, put the Bulldogs up 29-13. This drive was repre sentative of GMC’s offense all night long, as the team leaned heavily on its running back duo of Mason and Milner, who had 174 yards and 90 yards on the ground respectively, to wear down the Oglethorpe defense and to put the game away for the Bulldogs. The rest of the third quarter was a defensive School Bulldogs improved struggle, as both teams traded three and outs. GMC was fighting to preserve the lead and Oglethorpe was fighting to get back into the game. However, a 71-yard touchdown run by Mason early in the fourth quarter broke the game open, and put the Bulldogs ahead 36-13. With the game in GMC’s hands, both coaches emptied their reserves and looked to prevent injuries for the majority of the fourth quarter. Oglethorpe County was eventually able to shorten the Bulldogs lead, with a touchdown run by their third-string quar terback with 25 seconds CONTRIBUTED/Owen Caldwell to 3-1 on the year. remaining brought the game to its final score of 36-19. After two nail-biting victories, the decisive win over Oglethorpe County was GMC’s third of the year, improving their record to 3-1. The Bulldogs have a bye week, but they won’t be able to rest long, as the following week they have two games. They will travel to Schley County at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 26 to make up the game that was postponed due to Hurricane Irma. The Bulldogs will then quickly turn around and play Temple, as they return to Davenport Field at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 29.
