You can have access to all this free history right at your fingertips.” There is a lot to learn about what happened in ALAINA MINSHEW/Staff Georgia's Old Governor's Museum will be open for free on Saturday for those who get tickets. Milledgeville with the Old Governor’s Mansion and the Sallie Ellis Davis House. Both locations give a glimpse of what happened in the region throughout the 1800s. “It’s important to learn from history, because those that don’t know history are doomed to repeat it. Milledgeville has a lot of rich history that people don’t even know about,” Veldkamp said. “It’s important to get visitors, and people that live here, excited and interested in what went on here.” Georgia College students and history buffs in general might be interested in taking part in visiting the mansion for free, because of the special past it has with the college. It’sThe mansion also serves a reminder about how Milledgeville was the capital of Georgia from 1804 to 1868. “The Old Governor’s Mansion was home to eight Georgia governors from 1839 to 1868 before the capital moved to Atlanta. It was the headquarters of the government for the Civil War, which was really important. It was also the founding building for Georgia College, so it’s had a long history,” Veldkamp said. The Sallie Ellis Davis House is also steeped in history of the Civil Rights Movement and what it meant to be black in Davis’s era. She paved the way for the African-American community through education in Milledgeville. “Sallie Ellis Davis was an African-American educator. Her life dates are 1877 to 1950, and her home really speaks to the struggle the African-American community had at that time and period,” Randolph said. “She was a force for positive change in her community, she was a teacher and she really believed education could set kids free and inspire them to live a great life.” To take advantage of these historical aspects in history even further, get your free tickets for the annual “Museum Day Live!” at Smithsonian.com/ museumday.
