At age 22 he earned the rank of Second Lieutenant, Military Intelligence, and was assigned to EUAREUR 3/51, 4th Armored Division, Ferris Barracks, Erlangen Germany. Nat served his country for two years and was honorably discharged. In 1958 on a trip with his mother he met a 14 year old Dutch girl on board the Victoria who became the love of his life and married her on Dec. 27,1964 at the First Baptist Church of Milledgeville. They spent the last four months of his army life together in Germany before moving back to Milledgeville. In the spring of 1965, he began teaching at Georgia Military College, High School Division, and later taught French in the college division. After teaching, Nat began a long and successful career as a real estate broker. In addition to his career, he was very active in the community, serving as President of the Multiple Listing Service of Milledgeville, the Milledgeville Country Club, Milledgeville Rotary Club, and the Georgia College Foundation. Nat was also active in the church. He served for many years as the clerk for First Baptist Church. Later he and Karin joined the St. Stephens Episcopal Church where he was confirmed as a communicant. He sang in the choir and under the leadership of the Rector established the DOC program and spent many years as the mentor for the EFM program. He also planned all the Lenten programs for one season, bringing in among other programs, Dream work and Aramaic dance. To conclude the Lenten season on Palm Sunday, the congregation was called to prayer with the Rams Horn, and then opened the service with a song in Aramaic. For eleven years his work took him to the Georgia coast, where he worked for several home associations. During that period he was a member of the Kingsland Rotary Club and as a member, presented a Rotary moment every meeting. For his service they presented him the Paul Harris award. In his retirement Nat became interested in his family geology and became a proud member of the Sons of the American Revolution. Nat enjoyed his community service work but was most of all devoted to his wife of 53 plus years and their children. Together they believed their love for each other would overcome every obstacle that life presented them. He was a wonderful friend and a true southern gentleman.
