Sheriff addresses NAACP CARRIE MOON carrie@bbnews.today Massee speaks about shooting investigation The National Association for the Achievement of Colored People (N.A.A.C.P) invited Baldwin County Sheriff Bill Massee to a meeting Monday, Oct. 16 to address the investigation underway about the officer who pulled a gun instead of a Taser. Massee began by saying that he had a very professional phone call with Cynthia Edwards, president of N.A.A.C.P, and they had real nice dialogue; after which he said he immediately agreed to attend the meeting and address any concerns the community may have. “What we did with this incident immediately, we requested an outside agency to work it, we requested the GBI (Georgia Bureau of Investigation) to work it, and I told them not to tell people they can’t get a records request and not to tell people the investigation isn’t over, “ Massee said. SEE SHERIFF »A5 BOC hears updates on economic progress WIL PETTY wil@bbnews.today Matt Poyner, executive director of the Development Authority of the City of Milledgeville and Baldwin County, spoke to the Baldwin County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday, Oct. 17 to provide an update on their economic endeavors. ‘We are ahead of the game with our competition around the state and the southeast,” Poyner said. Poyner used his presentation to focus on two parks: the Milledgeville- Baldwin County Industrial Park located on Ga. Highway 22 west and the Sibley-Smith Industrial Park. For the Ga. 22 property, the focus was on the desire from companies to have additional solar panels placed on the property, and discussions on the Smith park involved accessibility and utility access. “We get a lot of compliments about the appearance,” Poyner said. “It helps us sell the park to industry.” Poyner also mentioned how SEE COUNTY »A9 » LAKE COUNTRY BUSINESS Smith Communications acquires The Jones County News STAFF REPORTS Smith Communications President and CEO A. Mark Smith Sr. announced the acquisition of The Jones County News Oct. 13, increasing the footprint of its community newspaper division. The Jones County News has received numerous Georgia Press Association awards, including second place in General Excellence earlier this year. The newspaper was owned by Josh Lurie and Debbie Lurie-Smith for 11 years. Both are staying involved in the business.
