LOGAN CROSBY Contributor On Friday night, rivals John Milledge Academy Trojans and Gatewood Gators, both undefeated, met at Ted S. Smith stadium to play for a region championship. The Trojans would fall to the Gators 34-17. The loss broke a 23-game win streak, and marked the first loss on Trojan field since Oct. 17, 2014. Though the Trojans lost, the offense started the game off hot. The Trojans took the ball and scored on its first possession. Quarterback Brandon Bellflower found Senior Caleb Rogers on a 47-yard post route that split the Gators defensive backfield. Rogers sprinted and found the end zone. The 72-yard, eight-play drive would put JMA up 7-0 early. Gatewood would then go on a 10-play drive that the Trojans would end after forcing a punt. The Gators would down that punt at the 1-yard line. The Trojans would attempt to have another successful drive to double their lead, but were unsuccessful. Gatewood’s defense was able to contain both the passing and rushing attack of the Trojans most of the night. The Trojans were forced to punt. On the next play, Gatewood Quarterback Reid Sasser, would pitch the ball to tailback Brandon Belans, who would take off for a 44-yard touchdown. After the PAT the game would be knotted at 7-7- The Trojans would go on a six-play drive that would end with a Hunter Noles field goal. That would put JMA up 10-7 with about 8 minutes to go in the half. Gatewood wouldn’t waste much time to get ahead of JMA. It took the Gator offense two plays to travel 71-yards for a touchdown. Sasser would scamper for a 60-yard touchdown off a quarterback keep. Logan Bowden’s extra point was good and put Gatewood up 14-10. Both teams would exchange ineffective drives to take the game to halftime. After the half, Gatewood would go on a nine play, 58-yard drive that would end with a Belans 9-yard touchdown run. JMA’s next drive would turn-up fruitless after two incom plete passes and a sack ended the drive. With the score at 21-10 heading into the fourth quarter, JMA hoped to get on the board quick, and turn the game in their favor. Unfortunately, the first Trojan drive of the quarter would end with an inter ception by Gatewood’s Will Dutton. On the next Gator drive, the Trojans defense would force a huge stop. The Gators would get as close as the 5-yard line. But on fourth down, Rogers would take Belans down behind the line of scrimmage to give JMA the ball back with time to work. The Trojans would begin to drive the ball but, unfortunately the drive would end with a sack on Bellflower by Gatewood’s Jack Harty. Three plays later, Reid Sasser would take off for a 20-yard touchdown run. The PAT would be no good, and the Gators would go up 27-10. JMA would take the ball on the next drive and go 71-yards in eight plays. Jacob Prestwood would have a 1-yard touchdown run. This would put the Trojans closer to a come back, down 27-17- On the kickoff, JMA would attempt an onside kick that would bounce in the Gators favor. Gatewood would then go on a five play, 46-yard drive that would end with another Gator touchdown. After the extra point, Gatewood would go up 34-17. JMA would attempt one last drive with about two minutes left. On the last play of the game, Gatewood’s Jack Harty would take down Bellflower to end the night. On the night JMA totaled 288 yards, and scored the lowest amount of points all season. The Trojans will start its playoff slate at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 27 hosting Bethlehem Christian Academy. The winner of the game will face the winner of Valwood (Valdosta, Ga.) and Burke Academy (Waynesboro, Ga.). » BALDWIN HIGH BRAVES Braves fall to Burke County Bears 32-14 STAFF REPORTS The Baldwin High Braves (4-4,1-2) fell below .500 in the region on Friday, Oct. 20 following a 32-14 defeat at the hands of the Burke County Bears (8-0, 3-0).
