Trick-or-treating in Milledgeville’s city limits is slated from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 31. Preparation is essential for Halloween planning, and officers encourage parents and guard ians to take these days to make a trick-or-treat checklist before the big night. Pedestrian safety is also important to practice during Halloween. “There is a fine line between Halloween fun and safety, especially when it comes to road and pedestrian safety,” Milledgeville Police Department Patrol Commander Maj. John Davis said. Davis said it is vital for both pedestrians and motorists to be alert of each other throughout Halloween. “Both pedestrians and drivers should be mindful of each other,” he said. “Drivers should be extra careful as there may be a higher number of pedestrians on Halloween. Pedestrians should always use crosswalks and not cross anywhere other than a crosswalk.” The MPD traffic experts also advise motorists to watch for children walking along roadways and curbs. In addition, drivers should enter and exit driveways carefully. During the twilight and late evening hours, drivers should watch for children in dark clothing. Officers are encour aging parents to either have bright colors on costumes or add some type of reflective tape — to help drivers be aware of those outside trick-or-treating. According to Injury Facts 2017, in 2015, approximately 6,700 pedestrian deaths and 160,000 medically consulted injuries occurred among pedes trians in motor vehicle accidents. The factsheet is a statistical report on unintentional injuries created by the National Safety Council. The NSC research reveals about 17 percent of these deaths occurred when pedestrians improperly crossed roads or intersections. Lack of visibility because of low lighting or dark clothing accounted for approximately 15 percent of the deaths. Those who are planning to welcome trick-or-treaters to their homes are encouraged to follow these safety steps: • sweep leaves from sidewalks and steps • clear the porch and front yard of obstacles trick-or-treaters could trip over • restrain pets • light the area well so visitors can see By everyone following those safety tips, the emergency personnel guarantees a safe Halloween experience for everyone.
