Greg Eilers, Director of Education at Lockerly, helped explain nature to visitors and educate the children about insects. “They looked for macroinvertebrates in the water, and you can use those as indicator species to tell about water quality,” Eilers said. “They were just catching whatever they could catch today.” Usually children at school get the chance to learn about insects and other organisms living in the pond water, but during Family Fun Day, the children had a chance to show their parents how informative Lockerly is. “This is the second year we’ve done this, but Family Fun Day is just a time where a family can come out and do similar things we do on a field trip,” Eilers said. “The whole family can come out and enjoy it.” Sandra Trujillo, professor of art and ceramics at Georgia College, held a station at Lockerly called Kids-n-Clay. The station gave children a chance to work with clay using a pottery wheel often used in making ceramics. ‘We had pottery making and we had animal construction, so they made monkeys, dinosaurs, dogs, and lots of turtles,” Trujillo said. “They learned how to handle clay and be expres sive with clay. They learned about touch.” Students from Georgia College of all majors were able to help out during this special event, getting the opportunity to work with children. “We are part of the community building and engaged learning, and it’s a chance for students to work with children using their experience in clay,” Trujillo said. “I try to make sure students have a community service at least once a semester, so it’s a good exchange.” Jacalyn Carper, a sophomore at GC majoring in art, said she volunteered as a way to have extended learning in her ceramics ALAINA MINSHEW/Staff Catching organisms and insects from the pond at Lockerly was used as a teachable moment.
