Your hometown newspaper for Milledgeville and Baldwin County, Georgia. » ELECTION 2017 Early voting finishes Friday CARRIE MOON carrie@bbnews.today Several elections are underway throughout the community, including the mayoral election between incum bent Gary Thrower and challenger Mary Parham-Copelan. Thrower is running for his second term as the city’s mayor, a spot he won in 2015. Meanwhile Parham-Copelan has served as a correctional officer and the founder/CEO of Word of Life Interdenominational Bible Church. City Council members Dr. Collinda J. Lee, Jeanette H. Walden, Denese R. Shinholster, Walter Reynolds and Steve Chambers will run unopposed. In Milledgeville’s District 5, incum bent Richard Mullins Jr. will run against Harry E. Keim, who serves as chairman of the Baldwin County Board of Tax Assessors. Georgia Military College Board of Trustees candidates are running unopposed in five of the six districts, however, in District Six, Mike Cobb and Calvin Hill will face off against each other for that slot. Early voting in the elections has started, and will continue through Friday, Nov. 3. The official Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 7. Those wishing to vote early can do so from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Hearing Room at the Baldwin County Courthouse, located at 121N. Former deputies may be indicted WIL PETTY wil@bbnews.today SANDERSVILLE - Middle Judicial Circuit District Attorney Hayward Altman announced on Friday, Oct. 27, that three former Washington County Sheriff s Office Deputies will be facing a grand jury on Dec. 19 in connection to a Taser death of a 58-year-old Milledgeville man. According to Altman, Euree Lee Martin died of a heart attack after being tased by deputies. The three former Washington County deputies are Henry L. Copeland, Rhett Scott and Michael Howell. The three men will face the grand jury on counts of felony murder, involuntary manslaughter, false imprisonment, SEE DEPUTIES » A8 » BREAST CANCER AWARENESS RUN Thriller 5K brought zombies, awareness ALAINA MINSHEW alaina@bbnews.today The 5th annual Thriller 5K and Fun Run happened on Oct. 20 at Central State Hospital at the Pecan Grove when the sun was setting. The event helped raise money for Keep Milledgeville-Baldwin Beautiful and breast cancer awareness. “This 5K is put on by Zeta Tau Alpha and Young Professionals, which partners with Keep Milledgeville- Baldwin Beautiful. The money goes to Keep Milledgeville- Baldwin Beautiful, as well as breast cancer awareness,” Jessica Vickers, a senior mass communication major said. “This is the only event to happen at Central State, so that’s really cool for us.” This event happens at Central State Hospital every year to help spread awareness about breast cancer, and to also have fun while exercising.
