JUSTIN HUBBARD justin@lakeoconeenews.us The Georgia football team overcame a sluggish start last Saturday against Kentucky to win in deci sive fashion, beating the Wildcats, 42-13. It was senior day in Athens and the Bulldogs’ seniors capped off their careers in Sanford Stadium in impressive fashion. Tailbacks Nick Chubb and Sony Michel combined for 238 yards on 27 carries for five touchdowns. Wide receiver Javon Wims caught six passes for 83 yards and a touchdown. Aaron Davis picked off a pass, which was ironic because he intercepted a pass against Clemson in 2014, his first game in Sanford Stadium. After the game, Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart praised the team’s seniors. “What a great way for these seniors to go out - winning the SEC East by going undefeated against the East,” Smart said. “Our seniors have given us tremendous leadership, and I’m happy and proud of them. Our seniors have set the standard and our young players have bought in. It helps to have such great leadership.” Freshman quarterback Jake Fromm went 9-of-14 with 123 yards passing. Fromm threw one pick and tossed one touchdown. D’Andre Swift carried the ball seven times and ran for 66 yards while Brian Herrien chipped in with 48 yards rushing. In total, Georgia’s offense outgained Kentucky’s 504 yards to 262. Although there were bright moments for Kentucky’s offense, Georgia’s defense had an overall solid effort. The Wildcats ran for just 124 yards and only had 138 through the air. “We kind of held them pretty good in the run game besides those ones they kept bouncing,” senior linebacker Davin Bellamy said. “Once we started fitting those right, every thing was cool.” Georgia put its blowout loss at Auburn behind with the big win and it also gave the Bulldogs a shot in the arm before traveling to longtime rival Georgia Tech this Saturday. The Bulldogs are 10-1 whereas the Yellow Jackets are 5-5. Smart said preparing for Georgia Tech’s triple option offense is never an easy task the Bulldogs must be disciplined if they want to win. “Tech has a unique offense that you don’t get to play but once a year,” he said. “It’s very different and you work on it and you try to simulate it. You have to do your job. And we need to do a good job of controlling the ball on offense.... Our scouts will have to be prepared this week to give us the best picture they can.” Professional Broadband Solutions HughesNet Authorized Retailer Your source for high-speed satellite Internet Qf FASTER SPEEDS Qf MORE DATA Qf BUILT-IN WI-FI 1-800-266-4409 HughesNet www.pbsinternet.com MARK SMITH JR./Staff Georgia senior running back Sony Michel looks downfield while making a cut.
