ALAINA MINSHEW Alaina@bbnews.today Education in Milledgeville is very important. This week was American Education Week, celebrating the education of students across the nation. Milledgeville residents are proud to express their enthusiasm for the love of teaching. “It’s probably about celebrating our past, but also looking forward to the future and how we can make changes for the better,” Pam Shields, principal of Midway Hills Primary, said. “Today’s children are not like the children of the traditional school, of the factory model, as you would call it.” Teachers are always trying to adjust their curriculums to better fit the needs of the children in their classrooms. These passionate teachers in Milledgeville are striving to make sure the children grow up bright and successful. “It’s about promoting the education of our children,” Monica Daniel, second grade teacher at Midway Hills Primary, said. “Not only for the impact it’s going to have on their present and future lives, but also the impact we have on them is everlasting. It’s important for the commu nity as well to recognize what we do as an important part of our society.” Lori Smith, director of the Early Learning Center, also believes American Education Week is important to Baldwin County and she’s worked to make sure everyone knows how important education is for children. “It’s about making sure the public and schools are able to come together,” Smith said. “It’s the jobs of communities, and I think that education week brings all that together to talk about how important education is.” With the effort of the entire community, the schools can help make these children well-rounded individuals. The efforts behind American Education Week helps inform communities what its schools are working on. ‘We need everybody moving together collaboratively in order to make progress,” Shields said. “We need for all the commu nity to understand the whole children, and in order to do that we need to come together as a community and to solve problems. Behaviorally, mentally, socially, the entire child.” Not only do Baldwin County residents need to be involved, but so do parents and guardians. Joan Wilson, PEC teacher at Midway Hills Primary, believes having the parents involved helps the children with their education. “I think American Education Week is needed for community support. It goes a long way when parents are involved in their child’s education and the child real izes it’s important,” Wilson said. “I think it speaks volumes to the child when their parents support the teachers, the school and they realize they need to be involved.” The Early Learning Center also had its fall festival during American Education Week, making it a great time for parents to check up on what the young students have been learning and have quality time at the center with their children. There was also help available for the parents if they needed it. ‘We wanted our parents to come. Not only do we get to have the fall festival, but we also have parent education things,” Smith said. “Parents can not only come through and spend time with their child, they can be with their child’s teacher, have a meal with their child and do some things for them to help them look for a job and help them with their resumes.” Having community support to make education for children possible is important. Precious Driskell, behavior specialist at Midway Hills Primary, echoed what all the other teachers had been saying about the importance of American Education Week. “I really believe in the model that it takes a village and it really does,” Driskell said. ‘We need all of the support of the community for the kids, because they need that guidance.” ALAINA MINSHEW/Contributed During the fall festival at the Early Learning Center, children were able to participate in a sack race.
