MPD promoting safety over holiday The Milledgeville Police Department, in a release sent out Monday, Nov. 20, urged drivers to travel at safe speeds, wear seat belts, use child safety seats and use a designated driver if celebrating with alcoholic beverages. Police Chief Dray Swicord said a large number of people drive on roads during the holiday season, and that it is important to drive cautiously. The Thanksgiving travel period starts at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 22 and ends at midnight Sunday, Nov. 26. The MPD patrol officers will be partic ipating in the Click It or Ticket campaign during the season. Practiced nationwide, the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety sponsors it in the state of Georgia. The MPD patrol officers and MPD Specialized Patrol Unit will be stepping up seatbelt and child safety restraint enforcement to increase seatbelt usage and save lives. The MPD Patrol Commander Maj. John Davis said the department will have enforcement details out at night using methods to identify those not wearing safety belts. Daytime enforcement will be done as well. According to figures by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, seat belt usage saved an estimated 13,941 lives in 2016. GDOT suspending construction during holiday The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is suspending all construction-related lane closures on Georgia’s main roads between 6 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 22 and 5 a.m. Monday, Nov. 27. Similar restrictions will be in place for Christmas and New Year’s holidays. Officials with GDOT remind travelers to exercise caution as crews may still work in proximity to highways, and safety concerns may require some long-term lane closures to remain in place. In the last two years, there has been a 33 percent increase in deaths on state roads. Georgia roadway fatalities total 1,337 to date with many of those consid ered tone preventable crashes. Over 70 percent of road-related fatal ities in Georgia this year are attributed to driver behavior including: distracted driving, impaired driving and driving too fast for conditions. Roadwork is being halted to allow for easier and safer travel during the holiday season, according to GDOT State Construction Engineer John D. Hancock. Rich Continued from A4 the rest, I figured, would just fall into place. But not as I expected. The housekeeper, through a misunder standing, didn’t show up. So Tink cleaned. He didn’t do the windowsills and baseboards as I always do and he didn’t get down on the kitchen floor with an old toothbrush and scrub in the crevices but he cleaned what people would see. Meanwhile in Connecticut, I took my nursing duties seriously, working with little rest. That, combined with bacteria picked up on the flight, had me very sick by the time the car arrived on Wednesday to take me to the airport for the flight home. By the time I landed, I could barely speak. I was growing sicker by the moment. On Thanksgiving Day, I was completely without voice as 28 people filed in for food and fellowship. They talked amongst themselves, they laughed, they piled their plates high and they celebrated the blessings of the year. In the midst of such fellowship and celebration, not one person noticed that the baseboards and windowsills were not dusted. It turned out to be my favorite part of Thanksgiving.
