Montgomery said she supports healthcare for all citizens, supports a living wage while helping small businesses afford it through tax cuts, continuing to provide fully funded education and helping keep rural hospitals open. “Small business is going to be what saves these communities,” she said. The 10th district includes 19 whole counties and portions of six others. The district includes Winder, Athens, Monroe, Sandersville Thomson and Lincolnton. A democrat hasn’t represented the district since 1995. At that point, Milledgeville was not part of the district. Montgomery said she was a progressive in the sense that she wants to move the country forward. She also wants to reac quaint Georgia with the term Democrat. “We have got to do some education on what it means to be a Democrat,” she said. “Some people have forgotten the meaning of the word.” During the speech to the party, she touted achievements done by the group. She mentioned the passing of the New Deal by Franklin Roosevelt and the fact John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson sent people to the moon. She mentioned concerns she had with Hice’s voting record while in office. “As a person of faith, I’m troubled by the Reverend Jody Hice and all the votes he has taken referencing the gospel that I have studied.” Specifically, she mentioned his vote against banning bump stocks on guns and his no vote regarding support to the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. “I’m not going to let 2018 Congressional Candidate Chalis Montgomery talked with party members at the Baldwin County Democratic Party meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 14. WIL PETTY/Staff this seat go uncontested,” she said. “That happened last cycle.” Montgomery also touted some of the victories by progressive candidates that occurred on Election Day this year. Democrats were able to flip two seats in Georgia’s 10th district, most notably in Oconee County where Donald Trump garnered two-thirds of the vote in the presidential race. She also noted Mary Parham Copelan’s victory in the Milledgeville Mayor election. “It’s happening every where in the district,’ she said. “It is winnable with the right candidate. You have to be somebody that understands people and cares about people.” For more information on Montgomery’s campaign, visit: www. montgomery2018.com/.
