For Heaven's Sake
Mike Morgan, Pastor • First United Methodist Church of Greensboro
A View from Main Street
We were gratified by the
news that former Presi
dent Jimmy Carter is can
cer-free.
Likewise, we have a
10-year-old boy on our
prayer list who suffered
from a particularly perni
cious cancer - and he is now
cancer-free.
In 1980 my father was
diagnosed with esophageal
cancer, after a lifetime of
cigar smoking, and given
three months to live. Dad
lived, and lived well, for
seven years - and died of
congestive heart failure.
While I can’t speak for the
10-year-old boy, my father
maintained an infectiously
cheerful spirit throughout
those seven years. Likewise,
President Carter has been
cheerfully and prayerfully
building Habitat for Hum-
naity houses all over the
country.
I don’t know why some
people survive cancer and
other diseases and other
people don’t - but I can
speak from my experience
of having recovered from a

catastrophic injury to my
spinal cord, that cheerful
ness, laughter and a sense of
future mission has brought
me far beyond what was
expected and predicted.
Norman Cousins
was editor of the Satur
day Review for 30 years and
wrote of his self-treatment
with humor in the New
England Journal of Med
icine in 1976, after he had
been diagnosed with a pain
ful, life-threatening form of
arthritis called ankylosing
spondylitis.
Doctors gave him little
chance of recovery, so he
left the hospital, checked
into a hotel, took huge doses
of vitamin C and watched
Marx Brothers films and
TV sitcoms, finding that
10 minutes of belly laugh
ter allowed him two hours
of pain-free sleep.
Eventually he recovered
and wrote several books on
humor and healing, most
notably his best-selling
book, Anatomy of an Illness
as Described by the Patient,
inspiring medical research
into the place of emotions
in the healing process.
I repeat: I don’t know
why some people live and
some people die, but I know
that a cheerful spirit, a lot
of prayer and unabashed
laughter has a profound
effect on our bodies.
God’s ways are indeed
mysterious, but I believe
with all my heart that
He placed within us and
around us the means of
healing. We will never
know what tomorrow will
bring - but we know Who
is there!
Christmas memories leave
a significant imprint
The Christmas season is
in full bloom. Decorations
are up, colorful lights spar
kle in neighborhoods and
Christmas songs fill the
airways. Jesus and Santa
vie for attention.
Christmas holidays past
and present are impact
ful. Holiday memories are
some of the most basic and
powerful of your existence.
Holidays are about family -
the starting point and most
important influencers of
who you are as a person.
Family experiences, and
their consequent memo
ries, are extremely impact
ful on your emotional life.

They dramatically affect
how you experience the
holidays year after year.
Also, holiday emotions are
the “tip of the iceberg” for
related emotions affecting
your life even when you
do not know it. Emotions
are the primary energy
of interpersonal relation
ships.
Ask yourself, what is your
gut feeling about the holi
days.
Are they feelings of joy
and excitement or of mel
ancholy and depression?
Do you want to celebrate or
isolate?
Perhaps they are a period
of blocked feelings.
If you are a person who
